I am new to burning dvd's and have several issues. First what I have is a dimension e521 dual core processor w/1g of ram. I have a tsst corp dvd+-rw TS-H653A SCSI CdRom Device. It does not recognize any Disc's that I put in it. With the exemption of one time after start up. I have seen similar threads on here about common issues, but I am not very good inside the computer system and don't want to mess up the registry or anything else.
I guess first I need to get the drive to acknowledge dvd-r disc's
    Needin help.

Your drive is SATA (Serial ATA), it will report as SCSI.
If the drive cannot read any DVD, even commercial once, it is quite possible that data cable is not seated properly or bad.
Go to device manager and see if drive is showing as connected and working properly.

You have been burning DVDs and now there is a problem with a particular software?

I have checked device manager and it says that it is working properly, something that thew me odd is under properties under computer\dvd rw drive:E the hardware tab has three componets
    1. ST325082 OAS SCSI Disk Device Disk drives
    2. HP PSC 2344V USB Device Disk drives
    3. TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H653A SCSI C... DVD/CD-R
I don't understand why under hardware for drive E properties there are three drives shown.

And to Attar I have not made one yet that works in a dvd player, I have made 5 attempts. Gettin frustraited.

When you check any drive’s properties, all drives on the system are shown in hardware tab. (if you check your HDD’s properties, it should show same.) That’s how it is.

What does “With the exemption of one time after start up.” Mean? It recognizes only after start up? It doesn’t if you open and close?

Can you read hard-pressed (not recordable) DVD?

    Check your Burner’s firmware version.
If your running Win XP (I’m not sure about Vista…),
Right click “My Computer”, click “Manage” to open Computer Management.
Expand Computer Management>Storage>Removable Storage>Libraries, then right click your burner and select properties. Revision under Device Information tab is your Firmware version. If yours is earlier than D500, then go to Dell Support and update your firmware.

Attar, this is the story, I am broke so I have downloaded bit torrent, vlc, and dvd flick. After watching the video on my computer, I tried to burn it and started having the problems after the first attempt with dvd flick. I also tried to run it on windows movie maker to windows dvd maker and could preview it just fine go to burn and started having the problems of the disk not being recognized.
    To grampyga,
I have updated my firm ware to d500 from d300 and it still does not recognize blank media. And I just tried a dvd store bought and it didnt see it, went to properties and it showed it full and no free space same as a blank disc.

What brand of blank disc are you using? It may be as simple as you're using known-inferior media.

If it showed it full, Windows is recognizing that some thing there, isn't it? Can't you see VIDEO_TS folder and AUDIO_TS folder in Windows Exploler?
Your system should come with DVD player software (PowerDVD etc.) and Burning program (Nero, Roxio etc). Can you watch DVD movie on your system?

If your system is XP, a blank DVD shows as 0 Used Space and 0 Free space (at least my XP Pro SP3).

    I am using sony dvd-r 120min 4.7 gb 16x

I have vista 32 bit, and no it will not play dvd's anymore. It sounds like it is not spinning fast enough to read the disc.

I’m sorry to say this but…
If you can’t play hard-pressed DVD that you could before,
and you can’t see its folders/files in Windows Explorer,
then your burner must be dead…

I went in to device manager and went to the driver tab, uninstalled my driver unplugged the drive, and restarted the computer. I put in a dvd and started watching a movie. Tried to burn a dvd I made and the drive spit it out and wanted a please insert a blank recordable disc. I removed the disc, shut down windows dvd maker and put in the dvd that I had watched. It did not recognize it again. Repeated the beginning of this message and am playing the dvd again. What is going on? I have to restart my computer and uninstall my dvd drive every time I want to try to burn.

So your drive can read and play movies fine, until trying to burn DVD with Windows Movie Make/DVD maker or DVD Flick (May I assume you use ImgBurn as burning program?).

There may be a software conflict.
Do you have any other Burning software installed, like Nero, Roxio?
Or any ripping programs, like AnyDVD?
    Or any Virus/Malware protection program?

Without any programs running, will AutoPlay window pop up when you insert a blank disc?

Can you Back-up some files/folders (data) with ImgBurn?
Can you post the ImgBurn log?

Though, if this is a software problem, you should be able to make your ODD work by just restarting the system (without uninstalling the driver.)
