    I have a LG XX-XXX-XX 4180b re-writable.
the xx's are the part i can't remember...anyways, i normally use 8x memorex and yesterday i tried 16x...and i discovered that my LG burner won't read or write...and when i check the drive when it has no media in it...it "pretends" to have a blank disc in.
It should ask me for a disc...but it doesn't. tried restarting my computer...nope.

I tried serveral discs last night...and it actually read one of them, but then went back. I use Anydvd with it and it was working fine as far as i could tell.

    I'm at a loss...anybody know what's what here?!

    Could be the media...

Memorex has been a very suspect brand.

    Try different media.

nope, i'ne used the memorex dvd+r 8x and it's fine.
and i tested it again last night....this time it reads all my back-ups and cd's, and original DVD movies i have.

and when i put 16x into the drive everything starts ok, asking me what program i wanted to use.

but after i burn and it finishes, i try to eject...it hangs and finally ejects only to give me a coaster!

i was even wondering if the disc was even written to; as the bottoms look just as if they were still blank.

firmware issue, most definitely~ :) upgrade the firmware on your drive to be able to read/write to the 16x media...i also 2nd the notion to SWITCH media brands...memorex is very unfavorable in my OWN eyes and MOST problems people have here is regarding said media...just trying to save you some headache down the line...

i would suggest some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim...and with upgraded/updated firmware, you will be a happy camper~ :)

were would i find the most legit (LG) firm ware for HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B ? I couldn't quite find anything above A302 which i have.

i don't want to risk any firmware that isn't from LG.

but thanks, i thought that's what it was.
i've seen somewhere a firmware for my dvd by buffalo? A306.

    any help is cool.

    cheers!

    hi,

well, here is the link for the A306...yes, it IS the buffalo one but i have read it is VERY good~ :)

    http://www2.melcoinc.co.jp/pub/hd/dvsmd5816_fwa306.exe

BUT, if you will only use LG certified firmware (i don't blame you, until i got the hang of it, i didn't use modified firmware either as it CAN destroy your drive if done incorrectly AND it does void your warranty)...then use the newest one here :

    http://us.lgservice.com/jsp/common/..._NAME_b1_a1=GSA-4160A303(EW).zip&FILE_GUBUN=B

this one is A303, which is NEWER than the A302 you are using now, THIS SHOULD resolve ur issues with the drive...ALSO, seriously, get rid of the memorex media...and go with my suggestions above...save yourself a LOT of headache down the road...

i HATE/DESPISE CMC MAG manufactured media..which is MOST commonly found with the Memorex brand~ :)

hope that helps~ :) good luck

by the way, i just tried that OFFICIAL LG A303 firmware link...you need to go through the steps as the "save as" link does NOT work in trying to download it...

    start here:

    http://us.lgservice.com/gcsc/b2c/hpi/main

next, go to page 2, or just click on "GSA-4160B firmware" or where your specific drive is located: click on the link for the firmware called GSA-4160A303.exe

    download and update...you should be good~ :)
