I own a Sony DRU-710A, I burn cds and dvds in excess and I use this burner to read in excess, so I can clearly say this burner has been extremely used, or used alot more than a normal user would, it has exactly 1 year old, and been used in 2 different computers, the problems is the next:

When I insert a DVD+R (blank or not) The drive is unable to read it, and mades a little cracking noise like its trying to move something inside it, tried 3 different brands which include: CMC MAG,MCC,Taiyo yuden, both blank and burned.

The weird thing is that when I insert a DVD+R formatted as DVD-ROM it reads it perfectly.

Solutions Ive tried: Update firmware, and downgrade firmware, tried to use the drive out of windows (tried to boot with a DVD+R.

Any recomendations do you think the drive has died on me???or It will exist a solution, I will try to open it and see if it has something weird I hope I can fix it but any recommendations or past experiences will be glady accepted

well from your detailed explanation on how much "use" this drive has seen over the course of a year, that MIGHT be the case that it has just reached the end of it's life... :) when you say "excess" what we talking about here? 1000+ burns/rips? or somewhere in that ballpark? i have the sony dru-710a also with well over 1,000 burns onto it already, but it's STILL alive~ :) it's also well over a year old too...

    some things you could check:

    1. physically disconnect and reconnect the cable ribbon and power dongle from the back of your drive...make sure they are firmly seated and then boot up your computer in hopes that windows will re-recognize the drive and try your blank media again to see if they can be read/seen~ :)

    2. sometimes the cable ribbon loses it's ability to transfer info properly, so now might be a good time to replace your cable ribbon (40pin-80 conductor ribbon from mobo to drive) :p this has "re-vived" my drive before when i thought it was on the verge of dying...simple cheap cable ribbon replacement costs about $2 U.S. locally :p

that's all i can think of to try before replacing your burner off the top of my head, the firmware revision should not matter since you were NOT having any issues earlier...i use the BYX5 and have been since it came out....

perhaps others can offer more suggestions, this is all i could think of right now...but, your drive might be on it's last leg if you've used it "excessively" as you stated earlier~ :)

    docTY~

Thank you..when I mean 2000+ Rips or burns aproximately.

Thank you for the recommendations, Well to take note about the cable is: that I have 2 drives connected to this cable and the other DVD-ROM drive works perfectly, although I will try to change from Ide port in the MOBO... I still think its a mechanical problem because the drive makes a cracking noise when trying to read DVD+R dics, I stil hope its not the end of its life and I dont think 2000+ burns would be it life expectancy I still accept any recomendations ;)

for YOU, i hope so too~ :) once i get up to 2000+ rips/burns on my sony dru-710a, then perhaps we can chat again...i am HOPING mine lasts as long as yours has thus far...i use 5 different burners in rotation for my backups, so 1 particular burner doesn't get "overused" moreso than the others, i try my best to keep it "balanced out" :) good luck

I was haveing a similar problem with a NEC 1300A that i had been useing for a year. I had been useing Memorex media for Burning CD's and DVD's with no Problems. All of a sudden it just stopped burning. I uninstalled and reinstalled, let windows detect them and reinstall and nothing worked. Finally tonightI bout some Maxell Cd's and DVD's and everything is burning good again. Cant say why ,that after a year of memorex the burner decided it didn't like the brand anymore, but next time I have the same problem, I'll know to try a different brand of media before I decide to buy another burner

Well I just finished opening my drive and I found that the source of the sound, is the lens trying to focus (moving up and a down) really fast in order to read the lead in of the DVD+R, and at last I found the lens where unable to read the lead in of DVD+R both blank and burned disc, so then as a last measure I took Isopropyl alcohol and tried cleaning very carefully the lens, but the problem is still there, so as my conclusion is:

The lens where overused so now their live expectancy have ended and they have worn out.

Any other comments to add, and for one last question: If im going to buy another burner and I will use it the same way, would it day in the same mean time, and if it will any solutions to this?
