    hi,

My Liteon 1633 is not recognising any of the DVD media i use. Everything was working fine before i did a disk defrag. It reads DVD's but doesn't burn to blank media. It also affects my other DVD burning software. Can anyone help?

Try removing and reinstalling Nero. Defragging should not have bothered the program but sometimes Nero gets corrupted from being moved around and this is similar.
You may want to try their Registry Checker Tool as well. I have it here at my website along with a few other Nero tools.

Download, open the folder, extract and run RegistryChecker.exe. It will correct your Nero's registry settings.

I re-installed and used the tools that you said but it still doesn't work.

i put the disc i want to copy in the DVD writer drive. It copies, then asks for a blank disc. I insert a blank disc but the writing process doesn't start. It also does this when i try and copy MP3's to cd. Disc info tool says there is nothing in the drive. I have used the blank discs before.

Can you post a Nero burn log? You should be able to find one at C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log. That's where Nero stores copys of the log from each burn you do. Make sure you remove your serial number.

Make sure your recorder is selected.
Open Nero Burning ROM, close the New Compilation window. Find "Recorder" in the menu bar at the upper left and open. Select the top menu item, "Choose Recorder". See if your recorder is listed and selected. also, your recorder should be listed at the upper right.

Next, try a simulated burn. Set the burn up as you normally would but don't put a blank disc in. When you start the simulation Nero should give you a "Waiting for Disc" message and your burner tray should open.

If you have your Recorder set and it opens the tray during a simulation then Nero is recognizing your burner correctly.

cdfreaks has a forum devoted to Liteon drives. Here are some related threads:
    http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=147507
    http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=147613
    http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=125972

After reading through several of these, I am starting to think your drive is failing.

You may want to use a different burning program to test with. Try burning an ISO with DVD Decrypter for example. This would give a good indication if it's a problem with the burning program (Nero) or something else.

You may want to try the drive in a different PC if possible. That is not always possible but will help isolate the problem. If it works in another PC but not yours then the problem could be with your PC. I doubt that though.

Why simply defragging your PC would cause a drive to fail is beyond me. You can always try a system restore and see if that will do anything.

Drives are getting so cheap lately that you may simply want to replace it.

    Here is what www.newegg.com has:

Are you multi-tasking when the burning process started? Below is what I see and recommend.

Memory is low, try to free up more via "msconfig" or "ctrl+alt+delete" and disable any "unneccessary" promgrams that's running. May be you need to upgrade another 512MB of memory to boost it up.

Get rid of Roxio immediately. Roxio won't do any good, especially if you have Nero on your system. Roxio will only conflicts with Nero and thus giving you "coasters." Go here http://www.downloadjunction.com/product/store/15199 and get it to completely wipe out Roxio from your system. Now, restart your computer and try to burn again.

...the last section of logfile should do it....

as to Datawrite Titanium - here's a copy/paste from another recent thread, snippet from http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/244549 -

edit- if it's +R Datawrite Titanium, with the 8x they seem to PRODISC.R03 coded, or if 16x it's the dreaded CMC MAG discs again. that's all i've found so far for +R - doesn't bode well so far i'm afraid..

Again, your memory is too low. I recommend adding another 512MB will be useful. May be you can try to disable some running programs by going to START, RUN and type "msconfig", then disable them programs that you don't use them at the moment. Or try "ctrl+alt+del" and end/disable any running programs that's unneccessary to run in prior to your burning process.

On the other hand, what kind of media/cd-r are you using?

I tried the DMA thing but i get this message on my primary IDE controller

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

I've tried the to follow the DMA guide but cannot get it to work.
I'm going unistall then re-install NERO i'll turn off all other programs and see if it works. If it doesn't i'll post the log.

    Thanks for you help

"12 This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system. (Code 12) Two devices have been assigned the same input/output (I/O) ports, the same interrupt, or the same Direct Memory Access channel (either by the BIOS, the operating system, or a combination of the two). This error message can also appear if the BIOS did not allocate enough resources to the device (for example, if a universal serial bus (USB) controller does not get an interrupt from the BIOS because of a corrupt Multiprocessor System (MPS) table).
You can use Device Manager to determine where the conflict is and disable the conflicting device.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard"

That's from Windows XP support.Someone know what it's trying to say?
Don't think it has anything to do with bad media, though.

I suppose a system restore to a point before the defrag is possible?
