Hi my dvd burner has failed using every burning program ive downloaded. I think it needs cleaning, its like 4 years old. but I dont know how to take it apart. I burned a disk yesterday on Dvd Decryptert, but now it doesnt work anymore. Using sony dvd-r media. Should I buy a new external Dvd Burner? Do you know of any good deals on external dvd burners out there, could you point me to a good one? Ive searched the forums on the net high and low and have come to no solution for my problem, so I think it might be time for a new burner,or attempt to clean it.
you haven't really explained what's wrong only that you can't seem to burn a DVD. a new external drive is nice but you really don't know if it's just a program at fault or the burner. What happens if you buy a new burner and still can't burn? Give us a little more information to find out what's going on, like: what programs have you used? if you are using Nero can you copy and paste a Nero log so we can see what happened. Those Sony disks.... are they MIJs or are they made in Taiwan? the MIJs (made in Japan) are top not.... the others are not so good! Here are other tips you can use: 1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x). 2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual. 3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this: http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php 4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk! 5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch! 6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better! follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck. also read this: http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Why-DVDRW-is-superior-to-DVD-RW/ why the +R media is better than the -R media and here are some guides and some ideas on software: http://webpages.charter.net/bacitup/index.htm
Every program gives power callibration errors. My drive is a Nec 2510a with firmware updated to 2.19. Ive used Nero 6 updated. Many freeware programs that all give power callibration errors. Media ive used is maxell dvd+r, which worked for iso image burns on dvd decrypter about 5 months ago, but they wouldnt work on Nero 6 for making data dvds. When I try to make a Data dvd I usually get errors all though I made a few of them successfully in the past 4 months, but usually i get power callibration errors. The iso burning on Dvd Decrypter and Alcohol %120 was working fine until today, dvd decrypter couldnt write to the disk, got many retries and then the error message. And I tried a burn on Alcohol 120 and got an error today. Nero test program says my sony dvd-r media is bad(all red), the same with my cdrs which are maxells +R. My booktype setting is set at dvd+rom.

edit out your serial # before it's plastered all over the internet. It's right on top starting with 1A20... use the edit icon on the top of your post of the nero log. shut off your virtual drive! Sometimes Nero doesn't like it! the file is from Roxio, or also can come in through WinAmp. Uninstall Roxio/Sonic programs then use Roxio Zapper to uninstall the the total program. As we both know these program do not play well together. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml <9>I have a Power calibration error? Options you can try with "power calibration errors" o Try another brand of DVD-/+R or DVD-/+RW media. This is the most common cause of OPC errors. o "Slow down your burning speed". o Update the firmware of your recorder. Check the manufacturer's website for the latest version. o Check your power connectors, loose connections do occur. Don't share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the errors occurs with an external recorder, Check the USB cable and connections. o Try different configurations, such as taking the DVD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master. o Clean or have your DVD burner serviced. There are cleaning kits available. Sometimes just a gentle appplication of canned air can remove dust blocking the laser. o Replace the DVD burner. lets hope we don't need to do the last one good luck!
Thank you, Ive been able to burn a data dvd, i have to keep trying over again, using the same dvd, and it will work on the third or fourth try, but I think im going to get a can of commpressed air and aim inside the drive, and see if that helps. Im also thinking it could be incompatible media im using. Thanks again
