I dont know if this is the place for this post but I am new to the board and I have a question. I have a HP DVD Writer 1040D, it is fairly new about 4 months old. Today I made a backup of a movie and a burn that usually takes 10 minutes on 6X took over 30 min. The Buffer level kept dropping back and forth and I never got a strong level. I am using Nero as my burning software if this needs to be broght up. I ran disk cleanup. Any info would be appreciated
Make sure your DMA is still on, it seems is not. If that is the case, turn it on: http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm
I have a Dell Dimension 2400, it is about 5 years old, and I am using Nero Express, I have the new version of Nero but I have just felt comfortable with this version since I have been using it for years
Here is what mine says for Secondary IDE Channel Device 0 Transfer Mode - DMA if available Current Transfer Mode - PIO Mode Device 1 Transfer Mode - DMA if available Current Transfer Mode - PIO Mode
It also does it for when I burn CD's, could it be something wrong with my burner even though it is 4 months old? I burned something either late last week or over the weekend and all was fine and then today it gave me problems with how long it took, it did back it up but it took over 30 min.
I am still having problems with my Burner, today I even noticed when using DVD Fab it took over an hour for the process to complete, before it took 20-30 min. Anybody else have any suggestions? Or is it possible that my burner is just shot even though its not even 6 months old?
You have to uninstall the drivers, reboot the PC so Windoes will st them back to DMA. You are in PIO mode , that's why is so slow.
so all I have to do is using the guide you listed above go to device manager then go to secondary IDE channel, click driver and then uninstall?
Yes. Then reboot the PC. Another link for setting DMA mode on. http://newdvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/520767
This may seem like a dumb question, but how does your computer get to PIO mode from DMA? My burner was working fine then all of a sudden this, did I do something or did something update that caused this to switch?
Usually it happens due to read errors/data transfer errors from your drive. After 6 consecutive errors, Windows sets the mode to PIO: http://winhlp.com/node/10
