I have a problem with my burner, its a 16x burner, yet when i am burning with a 16x Blank DVD, i only get the option to burn at 8x or 4x, and when i use nero info tool it shows write speed at 8x or 4x, is there something to enable 16x, if so any help would be appreciated, the burner i am using is a HL-DT-ST DVD RAM GSA-4160B, i have the latest firmware A306.
Just an FYI but burning at 8x is the norm and the safest route for 16x media... What type of media r u using? I used to have that drive and I think it can only write max 8x for -r and 16x for +r. No booktyping for +r so I never used that type of media in it.
Booktyping/bitsetting is a way to trick a stand alone dvd player into thinking the +r disc is a dvd-rom which is the format for all store bought dvds. Increases compatiblity. The 4160B doesn't give u that option except I think for DL +Rs. I checked cdrlabs.com and the 4160B burns -R discs at a max of 8x which means unless you're using high quality brands like TY you should only burn at your -R discs at 4x.
Ok thanks Unolord, i wanted to know something else i have tried many media with my lg and they are not compatible with my burner, sometimes i get burn failed in like 35 seconds, i have done a lot of testing and the media i have no problem so far with are -R TDK 16x and Memorex DVDS, do u get alot of burn failed from DVD -R blanks as well and can u recommend the best media to use for this LG burner since we both have the same burner, thanks.
I don't use that drive anymore and I never used TDK or Memorex - u should never buy either one really - but Ritek/Ridata and Verbatims worked fine. If u can get Tayo Yuden or Sony/Maxell which say Made In Japan then you'll be fine too. Stick with -R and only burn @ 8x if the top speed of the media is 16x otherwise burn at 4x and you should have no problems. But def stay away from TDK and Memorex. They're both low quality dvds.
Haomaru- If you have never had trouble with TDK or Memorex DVDs, then the claim that they are low quality does not apply to you. These discs and other media are often less compatible with drives and are, therefore, accused of being poor quality rather than being less compatible. But if they work with your drive, they are compatible with that drive and pose no problems. In the case of your GSA-4160B drive, it is rated at 16X. That means the diode can handle the extra power and the motors can handle the speed. Since DVD-R discs only work at 8X in that drive, they will still fall below the tolerance of the diode and the spindle motor and should work very well at 8X. Cautions to record discs at half the rated speed of a drive is more a function of the drive limits than limits of the medium. Recording discs at 8X on a 16X drive is easier on the diode (it will last longer) and slightly easier on the motor. It will typically yield better recordings, but dropping even slower may actually cause the disc to be "overburned" in the sense that too much power might be applied if the firmware has not been carefully tuned for high-speed discs at slower speeds.
Ok thanks alot for the reply Joe, cause i have no problems with those discs, once i burn at half speed, do u use the same burner though, and if so tell me which media works best wit ur drive.
I have 98 drives/recorders, including 3 Blu-ray drives; but I don't have the GSA-4160B. I do know that particular drive had some limitations with its compatibility, but LG has been very good lately in keeping firmware up to date. I have the GSA-4040B, 4082B, and the H10N; and all give excellent recordings at 4X or 8X. LG tends to slow down recording speeds on discs not in its memory table, but the drives do a good job with the slower default speeds, unlike many other drives. Compatibility is good with the discs you have been using, with Ritek, and, of course, with Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Maxell.
Ok thanks again, i realize the compatability with this burner, but i think its good it works best at 4X though, and once burnt, u have no problems, thanks bro, keep in contact.
JoeRyan, Your knowledge on these matters astounds me. Keep it up. Also, you have 98 drives? You've got some explaining to do lol.
Testing, testing, testing. Lots of research, writing, industry meetings, and consulting in optical, magnetic, and flash storage. Holographics and electron spinning are the next frontiers, but the physicists are still doing most of the work there and the engineers have to wait. It's great if you can turn a hobby into a job! (But my wife keeps asking me when I go over 12 hours/day at it, "What is is it now--work or fun?" She doesn't complain if I lie and tell her, "Work." It's usually both!)
Hi again Joe, i was wondering if u could give me some solution since u know so much about LG Drives y at times i get burn failed in less than a minute, and the strange thing is if i am burning like 10 dvds like 7-8 of them will burn fine, while 2-3 i always get burned failed i mean i am burning at 4x on a 16x _R DVD so i have no idea what the problem is, here is the log, thanks in advance. 4C80-[bold]serial number removed[/bold] Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 11/2/2004 12:54:32 PM NT-SPTI used Nero Version: 7.0.8.2 Internal Version: 7, 0, 8, 2 Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B>Version: A306 - HA 1 TA 0 - 7.0.8.2 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ? And one other thing Joe, is there any particualr settings in Nero i should enable when burning, cause i use the default settings, and with the same burning problem above, as i said i get burn failed in less than a minute, then once i put in a next DVD after i get burn failed, it burns perfectly fine, but no matter what i always get a few burn failed during burning processes.
serial number removed from logfile. A306 is indeed the latest firmware, but it's now 2 years old. The disc you're using in this logfile is recognised however
i personally see too many problems with TTH02 discs, i'd try some better discs, and try 8x ones (can't see anything wrong in the Nero log).
