hi ive been using dvd decrypt to backup my ps2 games and using dvd shring then dvd decrypt for backing up my movies. things were going swell until recently when i start the writing process and everything starts up. either the writing rate remains at 0% or after jumping up to 4x writing speed it will drop back to 0%....ive lost about 7 dvds now and im getting upset. i just did 2 adaware scans and im about to defrag and im crossing my fingers that it will fix my problem but has anyone ever had a problem with the dvd burner behaving this way?
ps i use memorex dvds and they were working earlier this randomely occured...

Memorex mostly buys its blank media from low quality suppliers. Use Verbatim, Made in Japan labeled Fuji/Sony, and Taiyo Yuden.

You need to post a burn log so people can hopefully help you. Are you using DVD Decrypter for burning?

Have you checked to make sure your burner firmware is up to date?

Have you tried going back to an earlier restore point?

Have you tried uninstalling your drive and the comm channel it's on with Device Manager? Upon restart both will be reinstalled.

Have you tried installing your burner in another system to verify that it's working correctly?

In addition to the great advice given by laddyboy, I would ditch DVD Decrypter as my "go-to" burning software to Imgburn. DVD Decrypter hasn't been updated in ages and Imgburn is a current engine that is recieving support and carries the same interface as DVDD so you shouldn't get confused.

well the thing is my burn log is normal it gets up to the point where it says writing and usually i wont even get an error it will just hang and not write....
yes i tried dvd decrypter and also nero and alcohol

i checked into updating firmware but my burner is I/O magic and i didnt find any upgrades for that brand...

havent tried restore point but i dunno how that could help...i havent done anything new to my computer since i started backing all my movies and games up a few days ago...

dunno how to uninstall my drive and comm channell unless you mean selecting the icon that makes my burner safe to remove. i have tried that i have tried restarting my computer i have turned off and on my burner....i just defraged and im going to go try again....if no luck i will try img burn....if no luck...ill be back..

    I assume you're using WinXP.

    - from the Start menu, right click on My Computer and select Manage.
    - on the left under System Tools select Device Manager.
    - expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives by clicking on the "+" symbol.
    - right click on the name of your burner and select Uninstall.
    - click OK.
    - still in Devive Manager, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers by clicking on the "+" symbol.
    - right click on the IDE channel that you're burner is installed on and select Uninstall and then OK.
    - Restart the system.

If you don't know the channel your burner is on, download and run the Nero Info Tool. Look under the Configuration tab. Don't uninstall if the channel if the burner is on the same channel as the hard drive with the operating system.

    IOMagic firmware is here:

    http://www.iomagic.com/Products/driver_search.asp

The reason you might go back to an earlier restore point is because some software might have been installed since you starte using the burner that is conflicting with the burner's operation.

Unless you have a laptop, uninstall the drive and put it in a friend or family memeber's system and see if it works. If it doesn't you need a new burner. I wouldn't buy IOMagic, not because it isn't any good but because you don't know whose actual drive you're getting until after you buy it. The burner market is very consolidated now with a few manufacturer making lots of drives for other vendors.

i tried reimaging and spybot, tried with img burn and just lost 2 more...here is the log... I 16:21:51 ImgBurn Version 2.3.2.0 started!

I 16:22:26 Source File Implementation Identifier: DVD-ROM GENERATOR
    I 16:22:26 Source File File System(s): ISO9660, UDF (1.02)
    I 16:22:26 Destination Device: [0:0:0] TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182D SB04 (G:) (USB)
    I 16:22:26 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: CMC MAG. AM3) (Speeds: 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x)

    I 16:22:29 Writing LeadIn...
    I 16:22:50 Writing Image... (LBA: 0 - 2165935)

then after it jumped to like 0.1% write rate and back to zero, i left it for like 5 min. while it continued at 0% so i unplugged dvd burner from usb to unfreeze every thing and then this message

W 16:28:42 Failed to Write Sectors 736 - 767 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.

i am using a laptop and the burner is external. i will try the device manager step but after losing this many dvds i cant help but feel like its the burner going bad? like it perfectly connects and my computer knows its there. its just when its time to write a dvd it starts briefly then goes straight to 0...so is it safe to assume its going dead after only few short months? i will try the device manager steps, cross your fingers for me and thanks for the continued help. thanks for being so kind and helpful.

Looks like your drive isn't liking those Memorex discs...as already suggested Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

so u think it is just the dvds im using? but why would they have worked prior? its something with that crc error...i dont get what it means or why its ocuring. and on second look i apologize it isnt memorex ot is TDK DVD-R...its just too weird because it used to work just fine with the programs i use and the dvds and now well at least i got to 92% this last time...i just dont know what to do at this point...

This is why Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are recommended...you know what you are buying. CMC manufacture discs for various other companies, their biggest customer being Memorex. They also make media for TDK, Dysan, Maxell etc. and to be perfectly honest are lacking when it comes to compatability. You may have got lucky on a couple and this is another drawback, consistency. The firmware update should have fixed any compatability problems, but it didn't work...so the next suggestion is to try another brand.

CRC errors are typical of dirty/scratched discs and simply means that the disc cannot be read or written to in it's present state. I'm not familiar at all with backing up PS2 games so I don't know what kind of copy protection is found on them...are you sure you have successfully removed all copy protection from the disc before trying to burn it?

Or simply put, I think you just got a bad batch of blank DvD's
Take LOCOENG's advice and try Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
I personally have been using Maxell-R(gold top one's) for about 3 years now and had about 6 or 7 coasters, I'm not saying they are the best.
But they work great for me, so if it works, just leave it alone.
    Good Luck Mojo1120
    Peace all
