The dvd drive in it has stopped recognizing any cd or dvd and wont even eject anymore when told to, yet it still randomly opens and i still see the cd image by the mouse like the computer is trying to read a cd when there is none in the drive. just want to make sure these are sings its dead, any help would be nice.....thanks

Before you toss it, have you uninstalled it via Device Manager?

Are you running any packet writing software like Roxio Direct CD, Drag to Disc, Sonic's DLA, or N-ero's InCD? All of those will completely take over your burner and will give you trouble ejecting a disc.

Does it show in Device Manager? If not, you need to get an external burner.
