Have new Hp m7330n computer with HP dvd840b DVD writer and Sonic software. I have tried to copy several movies with FABdvd. I'm able to read with the HP 840b and write with external NEC 3520a. I'm able to read and write with a Sony 510 external as well as read and write with the NEC 3520a external no problems writing and finalizing in any of these modes of operation. But, I can't not copy a movies with the HP dvd840b using FABdvd and then trying to write with the HP dvd840b as it will not finalize the movie and in fact it will lock up the computer.
Now I know I have either a firmware problem with the HP dvd840b and/or a software problem with Sonic Digtal Media Plus v7. I have contacted HP support, but they give me the dumb treatment and tell me they can't do anything about it. Sonic support mumbled something about a patch, but never sent it.
Help, this is a big sore spot with me as I have no control over this Writer or the Sonic software to remove the problem.

I am no fan of HP burners.I've posted to many issues with them and I had an HP 640c drive bundled up with my main pc-in my sig.

This 640c lightscribe produced poor quality backups. A couple coasters using Hitachi media, and crc errors on majority of the successful ones. I replaced it with a benq 1620. Now I got the Benq 1650 in there, but using the HP 640c drive just to read and do the lightscribing.

I burn all my backups on any 4 of my benqs, then use the640c lightscribe to do the reading and lightscribing.Fabulous booktyped dvd-rom backups that'll play vertually anywhere.

Sonic: I also have that, but rarely use it. The on the fly copy disc feature is 5 mins slower than nero.

I'd update the firmware if there is a newer one around.

If the burn program sonic finalizes with the other 2 drives,it should do it for that HP.

Another thing to consider: What is the brand name/format/and speed rate of your blank media?
You've got a different burner,so it may prefer a totally different format or MID code.

Good Points. I use DVD-R, 16X Verbatim White Inkjet Printables. I have used 8X, but can't get them anymore from Sam's Club, they only come in 16X at Sam's now. I use -R's because I have less coasters, maybe one out of 250. If I have a coaster with Verbatim it has come with the HP 840b, besides I find -R's work in about every DVD play outwith any errors or problems.
Anyway the point is, I may have to do like you and only use the HP burner for reading and write with everything else, in the mean time I'm going to look for answers. I believe that the firmware has an error in it and that Sonic(Roxio) may have a patch to help with the problem I hope. Sonic(Roxio) and Nero have alway been a each others thorat maybe if I use that I can get the fix in finalizing from Sonic, because HP's other writers have Nero in them and seem to have no problem. Just an idea!
    Thanks again for your response.
