AutoGK is a pretty straight forward program:
    Download: http://www.autogk.me.uk/index.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=1

    Xvid4PSP is my personal Favorite:
    Download: http://www.winnydows.com/news.php

Alot of people also like FairUse Wizard:
    Download: http://www.fairusewizard.com/lang_en/fairuse_wizard_dvd_divx_xvid_backup_tool_light_edition.html

As for speed, that is going to depend all on your settings for each program as well as computer specs. None of these programs should take all day, with my computer (specs below), I can usually convert in about 2-3 hours (and my computer is not very fast). I personally like Xvid4PSP because of the range of options you have. You have many codecs as well as containers to choose from, and a range of filters that can be applied. If you are new to this, I would stick with Fairuse Wizard. Pretty straight forward, takes care of most of the options for you, and results are great.

I use dvdfab platium to do what you want, but its not free.
