I'm having problems with DVD'S freezing in final chapter. I'm using pioneer AO4 with firmware 1.31, windows XP Pro copying disk to disk from liteon 48x reader with ltest firmware. I have tried using Prassi Primo DVD, latest version of nero and latest version of recordnow max. Also tried various media, Ritek and Meritline. The problem doesn't happen all the time,I can burn 4 or 5 good and then get a couple bad.
    Bad burner?
    Any help would be appreciated

    Pioneer 104 (f/w 1.31)
    WinXP Pro
    Lite-On 165H (f/w CH11)
    Nero 5.5.9.9

Copy on-the-fly ... No problem although I've not done X2 speed.Could this be your problem perhaps?
Because when it comes to this it's either going to be both drives on the same IDE cable give ceratin ppl nightmares (I'm not one of those ppl-I have both on same IDE & no trouble)
Or your trying to write too fast for read-write.

    IMHO

(I had final chapters freeze but that was on Traxdata X2 only if you had 1.31 f/w and burning at X2)

I have had the same problem, just to verify...

I have the NEC NV1000A DVD+RW drive installed, and also a CD-RW drive above it.

I've got a backed-up DVD (which works on my PC, DVD player, and PS2)... I put it in the DVD+RW and use nero to copy it... once read, it asks me to put in a blank, then starts writing... after 30 mins or so, sucessful burn.
Put the newly burned DVD in the PS2 (or whatever) and it plays to a certain part of the movie, then stops (freezes).

This happens with some DVDs and not others.
I've thought of recording at a slower speed, but Nero will only let me burn at x2 at the minimum. I can't understand why some DVDs will copy and others won't - and the most annoying thing is that I'm wasting loads of blanks!!!

I've also tried using Prassi Primo, but it won't let me select the DVD+R drive as the recorder (only as the reader) - but it will let me select my CD-RW drive as the recorder (and the reader). I'm going insane with this problem, I've even swapped the drives around with the tower.

    Any ideas... PLEASE :)

    Thanks,
    PETER.

You need to upgrade your firmware to a version that allows X1 burning cos movies over or near 2+ hours will freeze...

I had the problem of Traxdata (X2 <-- under f/w 1.31 ) freezing after Nero successfully finishing it...but on 3 seperate occasions (different movies) I had freeze in/near the final chapter.
Used the same discs at X1 all the movies were 100% okay.
Even using Bulkpaq X1 (usually just used by most ppl for data) I've had successful movie back ups.

    Just my experience ; )

Now that you have identified the problem :) are you able to point me in the next direction please?

Where can I find the firmware for the NEC DVD+RW ND-1000A?

I can only find the 1.01 version of the firmware, and the 1.71 (which is for the ND-1100A - which will not work with me, right?)

    Thanks herbsman!

Sorry Herbsman, what's your username in that forum, cos I can't find the read-up in question :(

I've read elsewhere about people saying about upgrading their 1000A with the 1100A firmware - any thruth in that rumor?

    Cheers,
    HUTCHINGS.
sorry for being a muppet with all the questions :(

Hi there, this is going to be a bit complicated, but I'm able to copy DVDs with no problems now...

The idea was to get upgraded firmware to be able to copy at x1, unfortunately the most recent firmware I could find for the ND-1000A was version 1.01, the next one up is for the 1100A.

So, I had a theory... copy the files from the already copied DVD (not original, cos that's a different story) to the desktop, then use RecordNow Max 4.1 on "min" speed to put the files on DVD+R. My DVD+RW would not copy the files across... it would fail before the end of the transfer (fyi, I'm using SmartRipper and the "Backup" option - this doesn't decrypt the files, just copies them to the hard-drive).

When I put the DVD+RW drive in a while ago, I took the DVD-ROM drive out, so I put it back in, as well as the DVD+RW drive, making sure one is the "master" and one is the "slave", otherwise your computer will not recognise either of them (well, mine didn't anyway)!

Now, when I put a copied DVD in the DVD-ROM drive and use SmartRipper, the files transfer to my hard-drive with no probs.

Used RecordNow Max 4.1 on "min" speed, and there you go... a working copy of an arleady copied DVD.

My next task is to use "disk to disk" copy using RecordNow Max, but it doesn't seem to work using Nero, so I'm not counting my chickens. It seems that it's more reliable to have the files (bup, vob, etc.) on the hard-drive and then copy to disk.

Phew... got there in the end :)
Sorry for the LONGGGGGGGGG message, just want to help anyone else that has the same problem.

    HUTCHINGS.

Nero does do on-the-fly copying [disc to disc]

I use it occasionally if needed

    Nero Wizard:
    DVD>Copy a DVD>Select Drive [to read from]>tick the on-the-fly checkbox>X? speed>burn

Sit back & have a cuppa..

Yes, Nero DOES do on-the-fly, but for some reason, with my NEC ND-1000A DVD+RW drive, it SOMETIMES produces a disk that freezes at a certain point in the film (only certain films are freezing during playback, e.g. LOTR 2, Sasquatch, Equilibrium - however many time I try, these ALWAYS freeze. If I try a different film on-the-fly e.g. A Man Apart, Final Destination 2 they work fine).

Someone said that it is because I am recording too fast, but Nero only gives me a speed option of x2 - if only there was a firmware upgrade for my 1000A :(

The only way I can make DVDs that DO NOT freeze is to copy the files to the hard-drive, then use RecordNow Max 4.1 - which has a "min" option in the speed choice.

Thanks for the help with this buddy, gotta go to work now :(

    BYE FOR NOW.
    HUTCHINGS.
