Hi, I'm not a computer wizzard and recently bought a Iomega ScreenPlay drive to be able to watch my legal movies (I know, boring but better safe then sorry) directly from hard drive on tv (I travel a lot for work and it sounded a perfect system to me). Now this drive requires Divx AVI format and not knowing what all of that means I've been surfing a lot and have not found any decent program that does not either crash, cost a fortune or produces a simple working movie. Either sound is off pace, subtitles not available or this stupid drive (don't buy one!) does not accept the format or codec. Does anybody know a simple program that converts a DVD or ISO movie file to a simple AVI/Divx format with generic codec and with subtitles etc. that does not require a degree in computer wizzardy and tweaking etc. to make it go, a one click program, lock 'n load? Thanks!
Actually the best ISO to avi converter is free. It's fairusewizard lite. It's fairly easy to use, it only converts dvd movies that are in a ISO, I usually backup my video_ts folder to ISO with dvdshrink. Fairuse wizard lite can batch process several ISO at one time and turn your computer off when it's done. It has the xvid/divx/x264 codecs built-in. I found the x264 codec produces the best quality, but everyone has there own opinions on which is the best. I actually bought the full version, because I like to convert to files larger than 700MB, sometimes I demand at least 1000mb for the best quality but only on my favorite movies. But 700MB is good enough for most people. This program spends about 3 minutes analyzing each ISO, this supposebly synchronizes the video and audio, in the over 100 conversions I have done I have yet to get a video with an audio sync problem. Also the program will let you fix the video so when it plays back it won't have any blackbars on top or bottom of the screen. It's a very good program. Some people have complained that the program is slow, but it's not any slower than other converters and I have tried many of them. I have an intel coreduo 6300 and it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours per movie. http://www.fairusewizard.com/lang_en/fairuse_wizard_dvd_divx_xvid_backup_tool_light_edition.html
Thanks, I tried this Fairuse thing (what a name) and the first test worked directly with no hassle. That is a first after at least trying 15 other programs. I am now experimenting a bit with various modes as far as the free version allows to see if it's really the progam to go for. If it works I might buy it indeed as I want to really jam my 500GB full with my movies for on the go. I agreen, more as 700mb might give a better quality although the basic is not too bad either on a small tv. I actually bought Nero 8 a couple of weeks ago to upgrade from Nero 6 but I was heavily dissapointed with it, it's just not suitable for this kind of converting.
Hi, It does but as far as I can tell only one subtitle and there is no way to switch it on or off (one one of the pages during the selection process you find that in the lower left corner as check option). I am no expert at all on this though so maybe you find a way of doing it. I am presently converting a lot of my ISO files with Fairuse but it's a slow process. In the future I will do my DVD's direct from DVD to Avi DivX but this time I had could not do it due to time limitations at home. I am sure there are better conversion programs around as Fairuse does come with errors at time, VCM error of some kind. I've reinstalled the program as somebody suggested but that made no difference though. Due to my Iomega ScreenPlay drive I am using I found only Fairuse to give me a coded that works on that wretched drive (= don't buy it!!!!!). Have fun.
