currently using decrypter dvd2one and nero to create dvd backsups - thanks to everyone for the earlier info...
however, i am still concerned that i may be giving up too much in the video quality by compressing the dvd's....what is the motivating factor for people to compress to one disc verses buring across 2...money , convience or what ...
i dont want to play these 5 years from now on a large screen hdtv and regret compressing them...

today the president of 321 studios announced the following, i do not no if you heard this on another thread or not but ..
within the next couple of weeks, XPRESS 3.0 is going to be released which will allow you your choice of just the movie (as is presently the case) or the ENTIRE DVD. All menus, special features and the movie on one DVD. Gold will be upgraded to include this new codebase as well.
id get gold ...try the full gold version and if your not happy get a refund i would not waste any time installing and un installng the free trial version
hey make a few and take em to a store and test the wide screen concern

    1)I'm a cheap bastid.
    2)I'm also a lazy bastid

You can tell if the compression churned out a really bad copy if you just check it on the monitor of yer 'puter. Obviously if you compress a 8~9 gig disc onto a single disc you will have serious quality probs.

I think you can go up to 30~35% compression without noticing a quality loss...I usually have to crank that sucker to ~40% and there is visible quality loss making it the quality of VHS tapes.

Yep, at 30-35% you will only notice the quality when a fast moving scene comes up.

    I'm with Tosca.

I also only copy the movie, which helps cut down the level of compression needed. I could care less about the special commentary about the director's dog.

    DVD Decrypter to rip
    DVD2one to compress
Nero to burn (I personally use RecordNow Max)

There's some nice easy to follow pictures in the link in my sig.

I've never [bold]not[/bold] compressed a movie. Unless it was already under 4.7 GB to begin with.

I watch my movies on a Sony big screen TV and haven't noticed anything on a movie that was under 2 hours in length.

You can use dvd shrink to stop the first disc after a certain chapter (up to the disc's capacity) and then start a second disc by starting the disc at the next chapter.

    click on "reauthor"
drag and drop the "title" files
    click on "start/end"

you will now see preview panels for start and end of disc. You can use the sliders to choose or do it by chapter.

I did this only once to extract one chapter and it worked . Theoretically this should work and there shouldn't be any probs.

oh yeah this only works with the main movie title. I believe dvdxcopy keeps the menus intact. If you have dvdxcopy might as well use that.

to get a movie that is over 4.7 (or so gig) to fit on a single disk u must compress it....no other way around it...in less the movie itself (without extras and menus) is less the 4.7 gig..................sorry pahtna

there are some programs that will re-author vob files with out picture loss_X_X_X_X_X_[small]Windows XP
    AMD 1900 XP
    Sony DRU500ax DVD writer[/small]

yes like CloneDvd for example, by far the best programe, but you all seem to use dvd 2 one and dvd stink for some reason,
i think you all like to complicate things.

agenda ! all this so you dont have to watch a "this is a copy screen" what.........
dude just press fast forward and it skips out
do not press skip chapter just use fast forward

for the past few days youve asked every question possible in so many threads accross the board. so many people tell you to use 2-3 other programs for one movie. do you like sitting at your desk being a cut and paste authour,? MAKING THEM, OR ?would you like to COPY them? yes thats right
    1)isert movie and press record
    2)insert blank and press burn,
    3)watch movie

    just get x copy
    just try it
and IF you dont like they real realy do give the money back.
if you have any questions you realy want to ask, pm me you could have asked me about the (you are watching a copy ) thing,
i dont work for 321 its just that you are asking all the same things i asked , you remind me of the situation i was in
i picked x copy and it works perfectly for me
and with 3.0 out you will be able to pick what you want to compress (if at all) keep movie uncompressed and just compress the trailers? etc etc..delete the trailers ok that too ..
is this because xcopy isnt free?
how can it be it works to well.
