Standalone DVD players can be picky about what they will or won't play. The type and quality of the media you use will have a great effect on how well they play. DVD-R is generally accepted as the most compatible for standalones although I've used DVD+R exclusively without a problem in numerous different players.

Use good quality media for greater compatability like Ritek G04 DVD-R.

HOW the disc is written via the burning software is my opinion.....

I believe it is HOW the overheads are added to the disc and what info is put there.....

I have no proof for the above but my experience with different burning proggies suggests this is the main cause for dvd players not reading the discs....

After all, you are just putting data onto a dvdr in a certain format with certain overheads....

This may spark a debate but as I said it is my opinion ONLY.....

I have not had ANY dvd+r discs fail to play in ANY dvd player I have tested them in - these have been produced by a philips standalone dvd recorder..........

Also I have not had ANY dvd-r that was produced with Recordnow fail to play on any player.....but with nero they did etc....

These were done with a selection of media cheapo and good.......the only difference was pixelation and skipping issues were evident on the lower brand dvd-r's......

This will be an ongoing issue and yes it would be nice to find a definitive reason as to why they do and why they don't.....

It is simply the difference in the red laser. The laser works to a tolerence and each time you use it, it burns slightly different.
Many standalone are able to cope with this variation, but many are fine and do not play them!

Well I believe that good media plays the most important role and then the ability of your standalone to playback varius DVD-R. Some brands of DVD-R do not play at my standalone, while most of them do.

You can see here if your one supports moulder: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers
