My XMS 750 DVD player will not play any burned DVD's
It will play any commercial DVD including Dual Layer and those from other regions without any problems, it has never refused to play any commercial media.
When originally purchased, the player was advertised as playing all types of media.
I am using Nero Reloaded as my burning software.
Being new to DVD, I can not understand why, there must be something on the commercial disks that the player looks for and for some reason, Nero does not burn that information to the disk.
I do not have a problem using burned VCD's with one Video file on the disk, they play OK.
When I have multiple VCD video files, I author them in Nero and then burn them to the CD disk, when placed in the player, they will not play.
Could it be how the disks are authored that is causing the problem, both VCD and DVD?
    I would appreciate some advise.

Hey kev, since your computer can play your vcd and dvd backups then that may rule out a software issue. You said your stand alone player is suppose to play multiformats. A lot of standalones can play most, some,or nothing but original discs. You can't go by the format specs on some player-they can play r's and rw's when the spec says they won't and vice versa.Commercial dvd's have a different format,THey are pressed in, not burned. Burning a dvd is a total different format,+ and -. Since you and your friends backups play ok in the computer, the likely culprit is your burner. Your stand alone should be ok.It sounds like Your stand alone just can't read the "signature" of the laser burn. The first thing you can do is see if your friend can watch your backups on his/her pc and standalones. If it plays ok in any of them then it could be a simple media problem or burner problem. Try some different media preferably high quality. I am not sure what media you are using, but this is the easiest thing to check. Also try different burn speeds, sometimes that works. If it is the same, then you can do a firmware update on the pc burner. Sometimes that works. I had the same trouble on my stand alone player in my bedroom "apex". It would not play anything from my pc. I put a new burner in yesterday "benq 1610" now that dreaded apex plays both the + and - backups from my pc. I don't know of any software to check the contents of any dvd right off the bat. maybe someone else does.Do you clean your dvd players and burners with a lens cleaning disc? Later

    saugmon,
Thanks for the info,I will try.
Another point, I did check some commercial disks which will play, all have the book type of -ROM.
My burner is an LG4160B, I do not think I can change the book type.

Hey kevsim,I just checked on your burner specs. It says it is dual format burning. Whatever format you are burning, try the opposite. That may help. Just whatever format your pc is burning, that standalone does not want to recognize. With dual format you have a little more flexibility with stand alones playing the backups. Good luck

    saugmon,
    Thanks for the info.
I am using Nero6 Reloaded for burning, how do I change the format to burn?

I also read an excellent article on -
    http://www.netfarer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8
it made more sense than anything else that I have read todate.

My problem is the LG4160B burner, it does not have bitsetting, also not sure if Nero6 Reloaded can change book type.

If you have the equipment that can do as the article suggests, I would appreciate your response.

Hey kev,That bitsetting my be the problem in standalone playability of backups. You said your player listed as playing many formats.Do you have a warranty on it?I am not sure about the nero 6 reloaded. I have the nero 6 express.I also have dvd decrypter, its a free burning enging. You might try dvd decrypter,it couldn't hurt.I also use dvd shrink, also free.I just downloaded dvd infopro for free also in these forums. I just use that to check on the manufacturer codes. All the previous things to make your player play the burned dvd's I stated in earlier posts usually takes care of those problems. Hopefully somebody else might have an answer.Good luck

Have you figured out what was going wrong? I am having the same problem, and have been trying to figure it out for a while now. If you have found out what to do, please reply, because my research has not helped me.

Hello sereka, sounds like your stand alone does not like the "recipe" of your pc burner. The usual culprit is poor media.Poor quality media symptoms are:freezing, pixelelating, skips, and the usual insert it in tray and no disc present error. The first thing we need to know is Will your pc player"the drive that burned these backups" play your back up ok.They usually do 99% of the time. All original dvds are a total different format. These originals are pressed in,no burn is performed. When we back up these originals, we therefore burn,it is a totally different format. This is where the stand alones have trouble. They may say they can play -/+ r/rw or not. You can't go by these specs. Every laser in a burner whether it is a pc or a stand alone home recorder has a variation between the lasers. The stand alones magnify the differences between laser, like i can play my friends backups but he can't play mine. The first thing to try is a high quality media. This usually takes care of most problems.A second thing to try is slower burn speed, especially poor media has to burn slower. Some stand alones will not play a certain pc burn no matter what you may try. I found this out on one of my stand alones. It would play off my home burner but not pc. No disc inserted error. The replacement burner I got took care of this issue. Of course this is a last resort.Let me know what kind of media you are using, format of blank discs, burnspeed, mode name and #,software for ripping, burning, and playing on pc. We can go from there.Pick you up some maxell's and try them out. Later

    Hi,
I am having the same problem with you. I have tried and tested it with better media like vebratim and sony or imation. It did help. My samgsung dvd player does not recogise some disc that I burnt esp cheap dvd disc. The programme that you used to burn the dvd also have an impact on the dvd player. For example if I used my dvdxcopy software to rip the dvd disc and burnt it with external engine like nero recode2 it will not play on my samsung dvd player. So whether the dvd will play on your dvd player depend a lot on the dvd burner, the burner engine and also the media the you are using. For example, if I burnt the cheap dvd player using my super dvd writer iomega it will not player on any dvd player. If you want to backup the dvd you must have a good burner, good media and the correct method of ripping and burning. You can download shrink 3.0.15 for afterdawn.com and burned with nero, bcos they paired off very well and they are both free of charge. Give it try and you will like it and will never regret.

All you have to do is to download the software from www.afterdawn ie shrink 3.0.15 and after downloading open the application and click on the tab open disk ie where your source disk is. Select your source drive and the programe will analysis your disc and then select the tab backup and follow the instructions and you are on your way to rip the dvd disk.If you have nero install on your pc by default the shrink dvd programme will use it to burn it on your dvd blank disc. A word of advise after finishing all the step leave the pc alone do not use it until everything is over.
then take the burnt disc out and try it with your dvd player i think most likely it will play well. Please use the good media bad media will sometimes will not play on certain dvd player esp the old dvd player.

My original comment in this forum was,
“There has to be some difference between commercial media and burnt media”.

My main reason and like many others for buying a DVD burner, media and associated software, was to convert home movies and family events into a DVD format for all to watch, not for piracy of DVD media.
My family members have many brands of standalone DVD players, some a few years old, some members will never upgrade any further.

I have done some research and not commenting on which product is good or which product is bad, that is for you to judge, even though I have my own opinion.

I start and confirm my equipment –
a/ DVD burner, LG4160B, up graded from LG 4120B.
    b/ Software, Nero Reloaded.
c/ Media, many brands, some high quality, some low.
    d/ DVD player XMS 750.

1/ I sent 2 e-mails to LG Australia inquiring if the LG burners mentioned above, would in future support Bit setting for -ROM, never received an answer, I thought this bad for such a large company.

I rang LG support in Australia due not being answered by e-mail, the answers are as follows and they were given in an arrogant manner and treating me like an idiot.
“LG will NOT be supporting bit setting for any DVD burners”.

I then explained about a DVD forum I visited, where the –ROM issues were explained –

    http://www.netfarer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8

The person I was speaking to just did not want to listen, I then tried to explain about another forum, where Lite-On was given a good report for compatibility using bit setting –

    http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum//tm.asp?m=86780

I was also told by this person, no media burnt, will play on any standalone more than 2 years old.
My question then was “Why does all commercial media play”, no answer.

I finally said “Does this mean I have to buy an Lite-On Burner”, the answer was “Please yourself”.
    Great for sales.

2/ I also rang a major DVD media distributor as I also heard, good media burnt as DVD-R would usually play in older standalone players.
I mentioned my burner brand and model along with the software I was using, I was advised to buy another brand of burner as my brand of burner is not very good for burning for DVD standalones, not even with quality media.
Not sure what this meant, maybe it meant the –ROM bit setting that my burner will never have.

3/ I contacted Ahead Nero, re their Nero Reloaded software supporting Bit setting.
My first reply was, “If the DVD burns OK and plays in the computer DVD drive, then Nero has done their Job”.
I would not accept this answer and again asked the question, my answer this time was “If the burner supports bit setting, Nero does also”, once more, not real sure what this meant.

4/ I posted in another forum re the XMS 750 player not playing any burnt media, the original answer from a company representative was, the drive must be worn out, this answer was totally unacceptable to me, I then asked why it never refuses to play any commercial media and from any region, the reply, no answer.

My final conclusion to this whole burning issue, the big companies, weather it be the burner, the media used, DVD standalone manufactures or the software people, the general public is being taken for a ride and a very expensive one at that.

I ask my original question “There has to be some difference between commercial media and burnt media”, the above facts sure make you wonder.

I would and I am sure many others would, appreciate any comments to the above, along with any success stories burning with the –ROM format using any brand of burner or media.
