    Hi,
I am thinking of buying a new DVD player but not sure which one to buy. I need the best one out there which supports almost everything. It should be able to play any brand media of DVD - R without any problems! Can anyone recommend such a DVD player?

    Regards,
    DiRect

I've got a Thomson DTH210 which cost about £90.00 and is very picky about what it plays. It only plays Ritek backups.
I've also got a Ronin P807 which costs about £35.00 these days and will play absolutely anything and everything.
I wrote the name of a movie on the lid of a pickle jar and it played the whole movie in surround sound.
(I made that last bit up)

Hi DiRect, Welcome aboard the Good Ship A/D Forum -

What agent-k told you was pretty close - But your requirement of:

    Probably isn't going to happen.

If you try burning crap media you may run into 2 problems -

First, allot of players won't play it AND it will probably will degrade within a year or so and then won't be playable even on your PC.

There's no getting around lousy media - it's just a bad investment - in the long run, you won't save any money.

I have a standalone player and it will play a chese pizza - Today's player doesn't mind if it's -R or +R, as long as the disk is at least of fair quality, it will play it.

If you have money to spend - a recordable DVD player is a good purchase - then you can burn a movie directly from your TV :)

    Good luck to you -

    Pete

    Hi,
Thanks for the help :)! So, what type of media will work good with my current DVD player? My current DVD player is a Sharp DV - 750! Any help?

    Regards,

Ritek seems to be compatible with almost everything (don't hold me to it though I haven't tried every player out there). I have a $29.00 Apex player that plays anything I have ever put in it. I was suprised it worked at all let alone better than my more expensive players. But again I have yet to have a Ritek disc not play in any player I have tried it in.
Unfortunatly trial and error is the only sure bet.

    Hi,
Ritek is not available in Canada! What about Verbatim? Is that good also, I can purchase that in Canada. Actually, almost all my burned movies have a problem playing on my current DVD player the Sharp DV - 750. It plays fine till a certain chapter than starts to freeze and play, so it's really not fun watching it. Althought it works fine on my Computers DVD Drive, it doesn't on my standalone DVD player. That's probably because a Computer's DVD drive can read more media than a standalone DVD player can. Anyways, what do you guys think about Verbatim?

    Regards,

The High quality Verbatim are excellent, the problem you are having with the skipping and such can also be caused by using "cheap" media. Before you go out and buy a new DVD player I would try the Verbatim discs with the "advanced azo die" it may solve your problem.

    Hi,
There are so many different types! Can you specify exactly which one to buy?

The ones that look like old time movie reels are excellent. I forget what they are called

Right michigan, the DVDs you are talking about are the "DigitalMovie DVD" by Verbatim. They are 4X and like you mentioned, look like movie reels.

Thats them I usually use Ritek's but when I need more before they come in that's what I use. Never had a bad burn with one yet.

    DiRect,

Sorry to jump in but I would suggest either the "Branded" Verbatims or, the best by far, is the Verbatim "Datalife".

By "branded" those are the ones that say "Verbatim" on the tops.

Like all the other mfgrs. out there, they make all grades. When we deal with DVD Video, we require the very best we can get (at a reasonable cost, of course (Lol)).

Verbatim DataLife meet those requirements :)

    Cheers,

    Pete

    Hey there DiRect,

We're not done yet me and thee,

Now that you're doing well, that doesn't mean it's time for you to leave - this is a give and take kind of deal - we had fun with you, now you get to have some fun yourself :)

It’s people like you who make this site work - You've seen how we work and you see we had fun doing it -

Now it's your turn, stop back when you're free and help someone else - You'll have fun and a chance to learn some more, (teaching is a learning experience too you know) the people you help will appreciate it and it will make you feel better :)

Then you can “Welcome” them into our little Club :D

We hope to see you around when you're not having problems to solve -

You'll find us hanging out, over there by the water cooler under the potted palm, chewing the fat and trying to help the next Newbie with the weight of the burning world upon their shoulders -

We'll be looking for you -

    Cheers,

    Pete

    DiRect,

It was a prewritten piece designed to entice Newbies to stay and help in A/D.

I actually have better things to do with my time BUT since you brought it up, I did check - 92% of your posts are a one shot /one thread. I truly don't believe that with a single post and zero follow up you have helped that many pple. Your posts cover almost every topic offered under the A/D umbrella. One topic, one post - it might be nice to stay with a thread until the problem is solved :) a friendly suggestion -

I'm glad you are active here so don't go getting all excited about things - The point I'm trying to make is - stopping in to make a single comment is fine but what we really need is to have you subscribe to a thread and follow a problem through to it's conclusion. If you did that, with all the topics you've posted to, your email would be so clogged with notices you'd have no time to answer them.

Be selective, follow things all the way - it’s what we need and you might find it more rewarding -

    Cheers,

    Pete

Now I'm all for helping out as much as the next guy...I've been registered on this forum for about two days, and have happened to read about 4 threads and posted one question (with no response). All that said, and I'm not disparaging anything here, but Pete, in two of the threads you've managed to be so heavy handed that I think most people who come here for help might be inclined to run away never to return for fear of retribution.

It's like when I walked my dog yesterday, and cut through this courtyard area in the hopes of spying a rabbit and we did see one, and we did chase, and and as I was leaving I saw a woman watching us and said "We love chasing rabbits" and her response was "Did you see that sign?" which read "no dogs allowed," and I said, "well, yes I did see it, thank you very much, but my dog can't read."

Sorry brucedl, but [bold]" I'm not disparaging anything here, but Pete, in two of the threads you've managed to be so heavy handed that I think most people who come here for help might be inclined to run away never to return for fear of retribution."[/bold], that sounds pretty disparaging to me.

Totally disagree with your assessment, Pete is one our "bestest" helpers in this forum, and he does stick with the thread til the problem is solved. He was only trying to give a little advice on helping others and I don't think you or DiRect took it with the spirit he intended.

This forum's personality would change far for the worse without his input and I, for one, would miss him greatly. So would many others, check out all the help he's given, you don't aquire senor member status being ineffectual. I don't see too many people running away.

So let's lighten up a little and all have a good time while learning and giving advice. As Pete said, Teaching is a better learning experience than getting advice.
