They're just two of the formats DVD discs come in -- they're both write-once discs (as opposed to DVD-RW and DVD+RW, both of which can be ReWritten many times). Whether you use DVD+R or DVD-R discs will depend on (1) what your burner can burn (some can burn both + and - formats, some just one and not the other); and (2) what your set-top (i.e., non-computer) DVD player can play (again, some can play +R but not -R and others are the other way around). Hopefully your burner will burn the type of disc your player will play! E.G. my living room Sony DVD player will play +R discs but not -R while my bedroom Cyberhome DVD player will play -R discs and +RW discs but not +R discs. It's all very confusing when you start out. From what I understand, DVD players that you buy today will play most if not all formats -- +R, -R, +RW, -RW -- but both my players are a couple of years old and when I bought them I had no idea there were so many different formats.

If what you're asking is what is "best" to use, again, it depends on your hardware. Many people in this forum use Ritek DVD-R discs -- which are great if your DVD burner & DVD player support that format. If neither supports it, those discs suck! :)

And BTW, when you first start burning, if your burner supports it you might want to use a few -RW or +RW discs -- since they can be rewritten, even if you burn a few coasters (which all of us do at the start!), you can just re-use them.

Hope this helps. It would have been nice if the DVD manufacturers had all agreed on a format, but alas, that didn't happen.

Hi eyedrops2, Welcome to our little Club,

You'll have a ton of questions about as we all did and still do from time toi time - DVD ROM, DVD -R, DVD-+R, Dual layerd, and the list continues -

Here is a nice reference site that will help when questions arise,
