I have an NEC DVD Rom which has been working fine for 1 year. It is in a Dell Inspiron 9100. I have done a diagnostic check and it reads a pass. It will read cd's and has allowed me to reinstall power dvd 5.1: the software that has been provided by dell. It will not read pre-recorded dvd films or stuff I have burnt onto either dvd+r/rw media using it and other dvd recorders elsewhere. It did yestereday but not now. A system restore has not made a difference.

Any ideas why this is so please?

Are all your drivers up to date. Years ago I couldn't play movies in my DELL XPS 500 (Damn that's old!!) after a Clen OS install, and it turned out to be Driver Problem. I downloaded some ATI drivers and everything worked fine.
