DVD reading/writing speed problem

Hi, when i firt purchased my dvd reader/writer it only took about 20-30 mins to read and then the same amount of time to burn. After about a month it started taking about an hour for each step. I am using a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW burner and the media is Sony DVD+R discs. The discs are 1x-16x. The burner is supposed to read and burn at 18x. The program that I have been using for reading/burning is DVDXGold 2.0.0.28. I have already done a virus scan and it seems to be ok. Any suggestions on how to speed up the reading/burning process?
