I have been a long time user of DVD Shrink to backup my DVD collection. Yesterday, I decided to try DVD Rebuilder/CCE. I was able to configure everything fine and I encoded my first movie. However, I could not figure out of to get Nero to burn my encoded files within my Output Folder, so I decided to run the files through DVD Shrink which uses Nero. So here is my question. Since I ran my final product from DVD Rebuilder/CCE through DVD Shrink, did DVD Shrink re-encode everything that CCE did? In other words, did I degrade the CCE encode by using Shrink to burn the DVD. I guess my understanding about encoding itself is subpar. Thanks
I presume that the file was not altered if the file was already small enough to fit on a single layer disc. If this was the case then the encoding should have only taken a few minutes at most. However on the Rebuilder side of things, I prefer to use the option to select make ISO image, I then use Decrypter to burn the image to disk. If you insist on using Nero, then use Nero Express make sure DVD disc is selected in the top pull down, select DVD video files icon and then navigate to the folder you created with the add button, ie. c:\ rboutput\xmen\video_ts and select all the files using right click select all, then use add and finish to close the add files window. Select next give the disc a name, and select burn speed.
Thanks BigDK for the response. You assumption about the file being small enough to fit to a single layer disk is correct, and the encoding portion took about a minute. I figured that Shrink would not alter anything, since I was not changing the size of the output file for DVDRB\CCE. I just wanted to use Shrink to get the file burned to a disk. I think my next go around with DVDRB\CCE I will use the ISO option, and then use Decryptor to burn the image.
@ brewha as big dk stated you could burn the vts files w/ nero! I also personally use dvdd or imgburn! the pro version will allow you to create iso's just tell it to via mode>output to iso image file! btw running the file through shrink even @ zero compression will cause some form of degradation, although minuteif noticable @ all, over processing is not reccomended, even though shrink imo is the best transcoder money can't buy!
Yeah, I wouldn't process the folder again with dvd shrink or any other transcoding app fo that matter. Kind of defeats the purpose behind using the great combo RB/CCE. Some believe that dvd shrink even set at no compression does not alter the files but personally I disagree. I have had it happen when I used to use shrink set at no compression to rip to my hdd. Burn the video_ts folder with nero express or let RB pro make an iso and burn with dvdd or imgburn. If you don't have RB pro or nero you can use folder2iso to convert your video_ts folder to iso files.
Thanks for the replies. I do have the pro version of DVDRB, and last night I used the option to burn an ISO using DVD Decryptor and everything went well. Now I need to learn how to batch multiple files in DVDRB/CCE, but I am sure there is a guide on how to do that. So far I like DVDRB/CCE combo, but there is one thing that it driving me mad with the program. I know that this has been discussed several times on this forum, but how do I alter the program so that my output file is less the 4.36 gigs. I have changed the setting in the .inf file, but no matter what setting I put it at, the final output is always 4.36.
Mort81 So you do not recommend using DVD Shrink to rip the file to the HD? So far, this has been my method: Rip- DVD Shrink or DVD Decryptor ReAuthor- DVD Shrink Encoding- After re-authoring, if the files can be compressed no less then 90 percent, I proceed with Shrink. Anything less the 90 percent I use the DVDRB/CCE combo. Anything less then 65 percent, I place it on a dual layer disc in which I use a 1 click program (DVD ClonerIII) Nero or Decryptor to burn. However, I may try giving Imageburn a shot. Is this a flawed way of doing things or am I ok.
brewha, First off the default target setting should be ok as long as you are using good top quality media. Yours is just a tad big. I would rather see it between 4.30 and 4.33. You should be able to adjust the target folder size by typing in CCETargetSectors=xxxxxxx right under [Options] in your ini file. Secondly, I believe without a doubt that dvd shrink alters (processes) some files even when set at no compression. Although I can't prove this I saw this on a couple backups in my early days of using rb/cce when I too was ripping with dvd shrink. I started using dvdd exclusively and dvdremake to edit and no more problems of that sort what so ever. The problem I was having is hard to explain. On certain scenes the background was sort of shifting or crawling behind the forground. If you do continue using shrink to rip at least be certain that it is set at no compression. Let rb/cce do all the compressing. Rb/cce can only work with what it's given. Bad sorce files equils bad output files.
Yes, by default there is nothing in the .ini file for target size. I can't remember the default target sectors. Vurbal used to have a link to rb hidden settings in his sig but he has changed his sig and it is no longer there. I'll keep looking for the default sector size.
The current media I am using is TDK. However, this is the CMC brand. I have yet to have a coaster from this spindle and the tool in Nero shows the media at 97 percent. I may be doing something wrong when testing though. I am looking for my output file to be at 4300MB. I believe that is the safe zone, correct?
I really don't know how to answer that because I despise any media made by cmc mag. One problem with it is it may play fine and scan out ok right after burning but it usually degrades over time becoming full of errors and having playback issues if it will play at all. 4300mb should be safe however. If you have to go any less than that the media is total garbage and shouldn't be used in the first place. My folder size is around 4430 give or take a couple mb and I use verbatim dvd+r's and never have any playback issues even years later. Here's a thread that covers some hidden settings in rb. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=482090#post482090 The default sector setting is 2236400. You can try lowering that say 1000 sectors at a time untill you achieve your desired target size. Eg. plug in CCETaegetSectors=2235400. You might lower it more than that the first time since you need your target size quite a bit smaller than you would with top notch media.
Mort81, Thanks for the help. It is very much appreciated. Yep, I set my sector to high. I am not at home at the moment, but I know for a fact that it is higher then 2235400 or 6400. Prior to lurking on this website, I did not know anything about the media issues. However, I am now well educated in the matter (thanks to this website and many of it's helpful guides). From here on out, I will be buying quality media as I know what to look for now. Again, thanks for taking your time to answer my questions.
brewha, You are very welcome. Glad I could help and share a little knowledge on the subject/s. Keep me informed on how it all works out and good luck.
