I've been reading all about ripping speed in this forum and found out several things to make it a little faster.

    1. DVD rom speed, faster the better. Liteon is recommended.
    2. DMA vs. PIO. DMA is best according to the replies.
    3. Flash / hack firmware your DVD. I've read this plenty of times with plenty of warning to only do it if you know what the hell your doing.
Question: If I flash or install a hack firmware into my DVD rom, will it rip faster? and How AND WHY?
Can someone help me find flash/firmware for Sony crx830e.

    4. Best CPU money can buy.
    5. Defrag your HD which will make is rip faster.
    6. Good Software. Which? I have Nero6.

Question #2: At what rip speed is everybody achieving? I've read 6 to 7 x is about average and some are stating 14x. How do you achieve 10+ x if you are ripping at this speed?

Question #3: With my current computer, what can I do to achieve a faster rip speed without buying hardware? Both PC/lptop DMA,Defrag both today, Not yet flash (can't find the flash / hack firmware)or exactly know how. Currently, my PC is ripping between 4x to 7x with the cheap dvd rom and lptop is about 2x with the piece of crap sony crx830e.

Is there any thing else I forgot to add to get a faster rip speed?

    NEWBIE X 2 TO 3 MONTHS
    THANKS

    Hi,

Very nice work on the research!

    1) Yes and yes.

    2) Yes.

    3) The majority of DVD ROMs will rip at full speed with no modifying. I, and many others here, use the Lite On 166S and it is a great little drive that rips like a madman. Most burners on the other hand are capped to a 2X rip speed for DVD movies and need a hacked firmware to unlock it. I can't really help with the nitty gritty of using hacked firmwares (not my cup of tea).

    4) The best you can afford :)

    5) Correct.

    6) Nero 6 Ultra is an outstanding burning suite and the only software you really need to spend $$ on to start off with. DVD Shrink and DVD Decypter are both free.

Question #2: 6-7X is about average. The higher rip speeds are usually achieved on single-layer discs towards the end.

Question #3: You're getting decent rip speeds with your current PC :)

dvd rom is already unlocked rip speed (or should be), dvd burner is locked to 2x so finding a hack for that will speed it up.

    http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php for firmware

6-7x is around average for unlocked drive, depends on the disc/computer/drive

as far as speeding it up, not much you can do cept make sure you have plenty of hard disc space, dont touch or run anything else while shrink is doing its thing, maybe even try in safe mode if your desperate (that way nothing runs in background) i wouldnt be too fased about getting 7x, thats good speed for average computer
