It currently takes me about 1 - 1.5 hours to backup a DVD onto my hard drive. The actual burning only takes about 15 minutes. Can I speed this up by buying a DVD Rom and just burn DVD to DVD-R.

If you are using your burner to rip to your HD then the burner may be locked to a 2x rip speed. Some manufacturers lock the rip speed but you can sometimes unlock it with a hacked firmware. Sometimes just pressing buttons in the proper sequence will unlock it. A dvd rom will rip faster and will save some wear on the burner drive. Check this site for information on your drives firmware.
