To both of you, welcome to AD.

Please check to see that your firmware is up to date.

thanks for the welcome, thanks for giving me a place to start. How do I check to see what version of firmware I have and how do I go about up-grading it? Please bear with my dumb questions but I am new at this, thanks, RickV

    @ RickV

seems like that drive is a Sony OEM drive on a laptop...

go here...i only see 1 firmware, it being 1.10

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1732

until firmware is updated by Sony, don't think you can do much more to it using offical OEM firmware~ :)

    docTY~

good luck, we all start somewhere...i'm not sure what else to offer other than firmware...however, seems like your drive (pioneer dvr-k12d) MIGHT be on it's way out..how long have you had it for?

I have had this laptop for about a little over a year...no extended warranty either! I was offered to extend it but at that time I couldn't afford it...now it is too late. I was hoping it wasn't the drive I don't know how these things work but I would think that since it reads CD's and data that the drive is working and that the problem is software related but maybe not.. when these things go do they start having trouble reading DVD's first? I recall that the DVD is much harder to read than a CD.

If I have to replace it any suggestions what I should look at? Will other drives fit in my laptop?(see i told you I don't know much aboout this stuff)
