Both my DVD-ROM drive(LITEON LTD163) and DVD+RW drive(NEC ND-1100A) have freaked out on me within a month. When playing back any disk (DVD or audio cd) it plays it back at a faster speed than 1x (both the audio and video). I use PowerDVD to watch DVD's. When I put the speed to half x, the video is close to being correct, but of course it doesn't play the audio at half x speed. It's like they are stuck in fast foward slightly. The rom drive started about a month ago, now the burner does it also. It's a year old Dell. 2.4 ghz, 768 ram. I use DVD X Copy Xpress to back up dvd's. Reason I mentioned this is because both drives started doing it while attempting to do a backup with X copy. This is a strange problem. Thanks in advance for any helpful info or leads. Rainman1

Read up on the ASPI. Installed and checked it, ASPI is ok. Problem still the same. I'll try to locate a firmware upgrade. If I just knew where to start looking? Would I need one for both drives since they are different brands or ??? Thanks.
Located the firmware for both drives, both already had the latest update and drivers. Installed anyway. Problem still there. Has anyone had or heard of this problem? Thanks.
OK, been doing some trouble shooting. I just did a system restore to a few days before the 2nd drive started acting up. The restore worked, took care of the problem. So I did another system restore to a month ago, best guess as to when the 1st drive screwed up, and the restore worked. Both drives are back to playing normal again. Now I just need help finding out what it was that messed up the drives. I do install the Windows updates when they pop up and the Dell Support Alerts. Maybe it was one of these that screwed them up. Any ideas??? Thanks.
It seems that i'm answering my own questions here lol. Just trying to give as much info on the problem as possible. OK, both drive were fine again. Tried backing up a DVD(Belly Of The Beast--Seagal) with x copy xpress. Got an error reading sectors bla bla bla. Tried to back up using the other (rom) drive. Trouble started again. Did a system restore again, both drives fine now. It has happend with 3 different DVD's now. Has anyone experienced anything like this before??? Thanks.
Never in my life, but at the rate you're going you'll figure it out soon enough! I'm assuming from your posts that you have a Dell, correct? Did these two drives come with the computer or did you add them at a later point? How long after the restore do the drives start acting up?
Yeah it's a Dell. (P4 2.4 ghz, 768 mb ram, Windows XP) Both drives came factory installed. Each time the drives acted up after using X copy Xpress attempting to do a DVD backup. Each time, x copy did not finish, an error reading sector... popped up so I would quit the program. Then if I tried to play any disc in the same drive that got the error, it was garbled play back. If I tried backing up the problematic DVD in the other drive and got the error, that drive would play discs messed up also. It has only happened 3 different times and each time was after a DVD backup attempt that had a problem with reading the DVD and gave an error message. The 3 different DVD's did have lots of scratches in them. Now that I know how to resolve the problem if it ever happens again, that's good at least. But the reason for the problem is still a mystery to me. Thanks.
This may not be a solution, but it has happened to me when I had an error trying to burn a DVD. It has not happened but 2 times, but I found that when I had an error, for whatever reason, it changed both my DVD burner and DVD-ROM to PIO mode. I had some problems after that, and by chance, I checked in Device Manager, saw that they were in PIO mode, and changed them back to Ultra DMA Mode 2. If you have a burn problem in the future, reboot the computer and check your IDE controllers in Device Manager and see if that happened to you. You may not have to do a System Restore.
Thanks Grandpa. I printed out your post and i'll make sure to check that the next time it happens. I was at a loss so I gave the restore a try. At least it got my drives working again. I'll make sure to follow up on this post when and if it happens again. Thanks for the helpful info. Rainman
Rain, Try using dvdfab or clonedvd2. I have beter luck with these and they seem to work much faster on my dell.
