Im new to dealing with digital media, and i have a series of problems that are all related.

I know this is probably covered somehwere in the forums but i cannot be sure it will be specific to my problem because im so new to this.

Firstly, my dvd rom drive will not recognise blank dvd-rw. Its plays dvds, but does that nescessarily mean that it can burn data on to a dvd disc?

Secondly, what file format does the data have to be in to burn it to a dvd so that it plays on a dvd player. (i live in britain and i think we use pal).
I have a movie that i converted to mpeg, and it said something about being a ntsc compatible format when i converted it. will british dvds and dvd roms recognise ntsc format? hell, i dont even know if mpeg is the right format for viewing dvds on standard dvd players!

also as my drive/pc wont recognise blank dvd discs i cant burn any data at all to it.

any guidance at all on the subject would be very much appreciated.

Not sure if I can tell you much about PAL or NTSC but I can answer a few things
    1) A DVD ROM drive only PLAYS DVD's. You need a DVD R/RW to write or burn discs. If you get one - get a good one.
2)The file format depends on what you are burning and what you are going to watch it on.
    3) You can put pictures and data on just as they are stored on your hard drive and then access the info from the DVD on your computer just like accessing the hard drive.
4)If you are talking about burning movies to a blank disc to watch on DVD player and TV then you need to make them into an ISO file, at least on this side of the pond anyway.
    5) from that there are many guides on this forum to help with the process. Good luck

most movie files are an ISO

whats the model of your drive? and are you sure its writer too? it may just be a DVD-ROM which will ONLY read DVDs not burn them.

most DVD players will playback mpeg files check your owners manual
