dvd-rw disc problems

I have some footage from my dvd camcorder is on a dvd-rw disc that will not play on my comp. I finalized it like I think I was supposed to. It come up as a file and even shows the amount of space left on the disc so it has to be reading it. Help, is it me, vista, or the disc...or what. What I'm trying to do is get the footage on my comp to edit it and make a movie. Also whats the best free software to edit? Thanks

I just want to cut the scenes and make a movie, nothing serious but would like to doctor up the footage I have. Thanks
