I have had trouble with my IO magic DVD RW drive before but I have been able to work around the issues. I have been able to burn CDs and DVD Rs without many problems but I just started trying to burn DVD+RW disks for the first time and I am getting strange errors. I have gotten a few DVD+RWs to burn but others Fail Verification. Sometimes when I insert these disks it will freeze or slow my system until I open the drive. Others I can open, but when I open them in Nero to add new files to the DVD RW the disk appears empty.

I was reading through several posts and tried a few things. I upgraded the burner Firmware, the Nero Infotool revealed that I was missing system ASPI files. I used ForceASPI to upgrade them. I downgraded from Nvidia IDE drivers to the XP drivers because the log was showing that DMA was off. None of these solved my problems.

If there is a simple and reliable fix for this problem that would be great. Otherwise can someone recommend a drive that I can get at a local store like Walmart, Kmart, Staples, Office Max, Target.... I really would like to have a working drive today so I can stop wasting time and move on to other projects, but I don't want to buy a drive if the problem I am having will cause problems for the new drive.

Here is the latest Log from a failure:

    Hi.

Since your burner burns +R and -R media OK, it's probably just those particular RW disks that your burner doesn't like. Have you tried any other brand other than the Sony?

Have you checked for a firmware update for your burner at the IO Magic support site. Firmware updates often solve these types of problems.

    http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html

There is a Roxio driver (CDRAL) installed on your system. It can interfere with burning on some systems. I don't think that's the problem here. If you want to remove it, uniunstall any Roxio software you have installed and run the Roxio Zapper.

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
    http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/EE6000061

You version of Nero seems old and I notice it's Express. Do you have the full Nero suite or just Nero Lite? The best version of Nero 6 is 6.6.0.18 available here:

    Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

Be sure to run the Nero 6 Clean Tool after installing the current version and before installing a newer version.

I'd recommend the Nero 3500/3550 or the BenQ 1650/1655 if you can find them. BenQ has been bought out unfortunately. It was a good one. NEC has new models out and have changed their guts so finding the older models may not be easy. Other than those, I'd recommend the Liteon models. I recommended those brands because they were/are widely used and their is both hacked and updated firmware available.

Thanks for the reply. I did the firmware update earlier and it didn't work. I didn't recall installing Roxio but I know that it comes integrated into Napster which I have. So that might explain the Roxio driver. I decided I didnt want to waste any more time on the old drive so I purchased a LiteOn model with Nero Express 7. It has worked flawlessly so far so I am very happy. Thanks for your help.
