I'm completely new to this whole idea, but I'm starting to burn DVDs and I heard that some DVD players can play .avi files rather than having to convert to MPEG-2. Is this true? How do you find out what kind of files your DVD player plays?

(Sorry if this is the wrong forum)

Good place to start is the box, or you could check the manufacturer's website. Barring that, look for reviews of player's online to see if they mention certain abilities.
I know mine said right on the box a whole list of features like MP3, WMV, MP4, yada yada. Pretty cheap these days, and it's far easier to not have to re-encode before watching.

Thanks. Turns out my player doesn't play avi file, but I found one that does that's pretty cheap.

    Thanks again!
