dvd to avi free and fast

thanks to people on this forum i have been able to rip, compress and burn using mac the ripper, dvd2onex and toast. now i want to learn how to rip dvds to avi. what are the good and fast programs available. ffmpeg froze on me, and handbrake takes forever. any other suggestions?

i am using a new 14 inch ibook with superdrive
