Ok, I've read a lot of these threads and people want dvd to dvd-r or dvd to vcds or avi to mgp to dvd etc. etc. I bought a new burner but just want to copy a DVD to one long avi, like you see on kazaa, so I can play it on my computer. seems easy, yet everything I use gives me multiple files, folders, etc. I just want the one click and it's the movie thing like everyone shares on kazaa. please help. (cause burning it to 2 dvd-r's is expensive and ridiculous when you can burn it to 2 cd-r's, and using dvdxcopy, i heard a lot of bad stuff and don't want to pay for it anyway. I heard good about Dvd shrink, but don't feel like dealing with it now, so just want to burn to my harddrive (and then can convert, 1/2, and put it on 2 cd-r's later if I want). thanks.

You want to encode the movie as a DivX or Xvid file. There is a separate forum on Afterdawn dealing with DivX.

IMHO, the easiest tool for doing this conversion is DVDx (the tools you mentioned, like DVDShrink, are for backing up DVDs to DVD-rs). Thi sprogram is pretty much a "one-click" solution once you have it set up right and know the basics. I did a quick google search, and came up with a pretty comprehensive guide for how to do it (including links to all the freeware that you will need):

DVDx is an amazing program, and the first I ever used in my own DivX and VCD days.
    Good luck....

Thank you very much! I tried it and it was perfect! To do it like you said following afterdawn, you have to download 7 things and go though waiting forever, etc. the only thing is, when I'm ready to burn it to a dvd-r (or vcd) can I just use tncge (like you can an avi) and do it, or can you never do it (I didn't find a guide to)? I don't even know why I bought a dvd burner. The software it comes with says the DVD is copy protected so won't do it, and hell, a cdrw comes FREE with your comptuer (or 9.99 with rebate if you have an old computer) to just store stuff! so you don't have to spend 300!! to do that! and the stuff like dvd shink makes many files and you have to use multiple programs and jump through many hoops, and from what I hear, the dvdxcopy puts a big warning thing in the front (plus the free download you can only burn 3, and it doesn't work 1/2 the time), so ??!!! ug. back to downloading from kazza and using tmpnc and nero? no, because kazza is crap!!! 2/3's the stuff you download isn't what it says, and 1/3 of the stuff doesn't play (w/big codex bundle), that covers 100%! ug. if they were going to make dvd burners (initial cost was 600), then they should have let you do something SIMPLE like back up your dang DVD movies!!!!! I thought when they kept writing, back up your docs, pics, etc. that was just a way to not promote copying DVD's, but hell, it doens't!! (without jumping through hoops) so why get one!! Just use a CDRW!!! and hell, a CDRW can back up your DVD's too! VCD. ok, this is long, done going off. PLease address how to put the dvdx on my dvd-r or CDRW (incase I scream about the price of the DVD-r when I can just use 2 CDRW's, ESPECIALLY it's rediculous if you have to use TWO dvd-r's!!!). NOTE: I don't care about the features if I can get it on one Dvd-r (well there isn't features anyway, if I already used dvdx2.2). thanks.

    Woah Dude!
    Slow down a sec!
First off, if you have an AVI file that is less than 4.3Gb, you can just burn it straight to a blank DVD-R disc in data mode (use the Nero Wizard) or if it is less than 750MB you can burn it straight to a CDr.
But you said that you had a DVD burner, which means that you can do much better than AVI or VCD (which is crap compared to a true DVD backup), and you can do it in much less time also.
It takes a few tries to learn, but backing up a DVD to a DVD-R is actually a very simple and easy process that needs just one simple tool and a well-written guide: DVDshrink is the tool, and the best guide available is at:

    http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/dvd_shrink.htm

No warning screens, no two DVD-R discs, no fuss. Take my advice and give it a chance...you may be confused at first, but you will be getting a MUCH better and more convenient result.

PS..please use paragraph breaks...they make posts MUCH easier to read!
