I am really new to this and I want to convert some of my DVDs to put them onto my new iPod. I saw on Engadget their guide but I think you guys might have an easier way. I have a few questions that I was hoping to get answered. 1. Is there anyway to convert DVDs straight to h.264 320x240? 2. Is there a way to pull down avi's or mpeg's by using DVD Shrink? 3. If the answers to both of these are no, then can you please explain it to me. Thanks to anyone who helps me...I am lost in this process.
Here is the link for Videora http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/ As well as pqDVD http://www.pqdvd.com/dvd-to-ipod-video-converter.html
mencoder can convert directly from a DVD and encode with x264. Really though you are better off ripping first rather than converting directly. Videora appears to be ffmpeg/x264 based, no idea whose codec the other app is using, I doubt that they developed their own AVC codec though. Nero recode would be another option. DVDShrink is an MPEG2 transcoder. It can only shrink MPEG2 and it requires that it be in a DVD format. So no mpg's unless you author them first.
Here are two guides about converting dvd to ipod. For Mac (it is free): http://www.dvd-tool.com/dvd-rip-software/mac-dvd-rip.html For PC: http://www.dvd-tool.com/dvd-rip-software/dvd-ipod-mp4.html It also supports avi/mpeg to ipod. jaehomo, you can convert dvds to h.264 directly.
