Certain ripping programs can read a VR mode disc. Cyberlink Power Producer is one. I believe TMPGEnc DVD Author will read them as well if the disc is finalized. Both of these programs have free trial versions, I think. Some drives and certain programs can also read an unfinalized VR disc. Since VR mode is a UDF format, you can also try installing some sort of UDF-reading software on your PC like packet writing programs (InCD, DirectCD, etc.) which may help.

Without knowing every detail, I can't say why. All I can say is it works for me. I use either Cyberlink Power Producer or TMPGEnc DVD Author to import the files from the DVD. I also have Nero InCD installed. You might try some other software that reads UDF format discs like Pinnacle Instant Write. I assume you finalized the disc in the recorder.

... it is essential that you finalize a DVD-RW disc before you attempt to read it in any machine other that the source machine.

NeroVisionExpress3 is an excellent program for ripping/processing a VR disc .. I have also had great success using DVD Decrypter along with DVD Shrink to rip/edit DVD VR discs
