Hello. I have been using FairUse a lot, so far having backed up about 300 of my movies with it, but am unclear as to how to get subtitles out of a DVD with it. It seems you can have them hardencoded, but I do not want that. I would like to use FairUse to take the subtitles out, preferably in a format like .srt or one I can throw into ConvertXtoDVD, should I ever lose the main disc and wish to convert back, so how do I do this? Thanks.
srt is a text format and therefor requires OCR'ing, so it can't really be 100% automated. Try SubRip.
I am aware of .srt's characteristics but not those of FairUse's subtitle features. My question is on those. Can you tell me which of the choices removes the subtitle file(s) from the DVD and results in a seperate XviD and subtitle file?
That is my point. I don't think it can and if it could it would have to be VOBSub's, not text. Just rip seperatly.
You were answering my question about .srt files. I am not asking about that anymore. Forget .srt files. Can you tell me which of the choices removes the subtitle file(s) from the DVD and results in a seperate XviD and subtitle file? I know one can, as there are a few options, but it's not clear which one does and in what format the subtitle comes out.
"Tick extract subtitles and as I said you get VOBSubs (*.sub/idx)." I missed where you said to "tick extract subtitles". Thanks though. All is well
There is only one place with subtitle settings as far as I know. Think it was on the cropping/source range page. There is an enable subtitles box, a drop down list with the languages, a force subtitles only box and a extract subtitles box. Shot if from MSVC resource editor since I couldn't be bothered loading up a DVD to get a shot of the actual app.
That's the bit I remember. What you are saying is to tick the "Demux subtitles..." box, yes? That will yield an avi and DVD compatible subtitles, will it? .srt subtitles are easy to view in playback, with an avi. Questions: 1 - How would I view the avi I had made, using these subtitles at the same time? Is there a player that would take them, with an avi, and play both? 2 - For arguments sake, if I were to convert the avi back to a DVD (convertxtodvd or other) and I had my audio and video folders... Where would I dump these new VOB+IFO files... so that picking the lot up with Shrink, would wrap them into one (movie and optional subs, as in the first place)? There's a few things to chew on. I'll try subrip in any case, because I would like to have another tool in the arsenal, but the answers to those will be interesting.
The compiled version actually says "Extract subtitles", exactly as I said. Also the above VOB+IFO is wrong, as I said you get sub/idx which are vobsubs. FairUse will give them the same name as your avi, so they will be autoloaded by dvobsub, mplayer, ffdshow, etc. same as an srt would. For authoring you could convert to sup and author with an app that supports sup subs. If you are missing the lang file though it would say Demux subtitles... same as in the resource editor.
