I didn't have luck searching, but maybe I don't know the right keywords for this...

I've been using 1x princo unbranded dvdr media in my pioneer a04. It's been great, and I recently bought some skye 2x media as me next batch of blanks.

This skye media burns great, and at 2x, which is nice. However, when I load it into a dvd drive or my standalone player, it spins up very loudly...sounds like the actual disc is off center and out of balance...or maybe too thick? It sounds like the disc is hitting something inside the player. It's REALLY loud.

In any case, the media can't be read...but I can pop a burned princo dvdr disc in, and everything is okay, o the drives/player is good.

What's going on? Anyone have experience with this media?

hmmm...well, worth a try. I'll post this evening if after I've tested it.

wonder why the discs would make all that noise though...

Yeah, I hope you find a solution to this problem, because I just found a site that has those Sky brand DVD's for a Very nice price. Im using the same burner as you...so if you dont get them to work, i dont think i'll pick them up.

I have the same pioneer 104

I can never get any of the PRINCO discs to work after I've burned them using Nero 5.5 or 6.0

so when I switched over to SKY 2x and burned them at 2x and all worked perfectly for me. Princo will not work for me.

I also use DVDPro and it's thicker than Princo and Sky media. I don't think it's the thickness that causes the problem. Let us know how it goes ok.

    DVDPlanet-
Stange, I use the Princos and they work great for me. I use Copy2DVD to burn...maybe i'll check out the sky's too since they are such a great price, and you've had success with them

hmmm...something is screwed on my pc. I can't get it to stable enough to burn at 1x...so I'm taking a hiatus from buring till I sort out the instability.

I pulled the plug on my standalone, because in the past, it's misbehaved inexplicably until it's depowered. after "resetting" the standalone, the sky media I already had burned at 2x played, though it took a really really long time to load, and the discs spin quite loudly.

So I think the sky media is good to go. Thanks for your suggestions guys!

I'm coming into this thread a little late, but I'd like to comment and get feedback. I bought my first DVD burner a few months ago. It's a Pioneer DVR-106. I looked around and bought the best deal I could find on a spindle of discs, which turned out to be a batch of Sky brand, 4x discs. The only bad burns I've had were due to stupid things, like anti-virus software deciding that my burning a disc is the perfect time to do a web-update. Jerks. Anyway, I really like these discs, but I've noticed a couple of odd things. First, I can only find one place now that sells them (Yesbuy.net), but they're not listed as a house brand, and Yesbuy mails their discs out in envelopes without a spindle case. That ticked me off, especially when they got here and the internal celophane had come apart and the discs were loose and a few were scratched (and they didn't reply to my complaint email). Does anyone know of another, reputable vendor that sells Sky? Secondly, I can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure that the first few discs I burned only took about 15 or 20 minutes, but now all of them take just about 45 (in all cases they are burning at 4x using Nero). How long is a 4x burn *supposed* to take under normal circumstances? Is 45 minutes normal and I'm remembering incorrectly, or has something strange happened that is slowing things down? I saw an ad for a different brand that said they were "4 plus x" and that those would burn in 20 minutes (actual burn would be 4.3x, they say, if set to 4x), so I at least know it's possible for such low burn times, although I don't know if that's normal or not. Comments?

Are you performing data verification? I've been burning with 4x Ritek G04 media and performing data verification once burning is finished. I'd say 45 min. is about right for 4x plus data verification.

The reason I verify is that I ALWAYS have successful burns, but I often get failed data verification, 100% of the time in Nero, much less with other software. This results in discs that will play in my standalone, but usually skip or have other playback problems.

As far as buying media goes, you've heard it before and you'll hear it again -- buy the Ritek G04. It's the best, and second rate media causes lots of problems.

    ESbuy.com has 25 spindles of the G04 for $33.

I don't always use data verification. When I do, it takes *another* 45 minutes to verify the disc! So I only do it some of the time. Sky discs, so far, always come out 100% verified when I do.

I haven't tried the Riteks because they are so much more expensive. Money is a big factor for me (I'm disabled and my monthly check doesn't allow me to be anything but extremely frugal). When I bought my first spindle of discs (Sky) they were right around a buck a disc. Now that I've almost used them all up and am looking for more, I'm seeing that the prices have dropped a lot. $33 for 25 discs is outrageous, I think, when compared to the prices I've been seeing. HQ discs are all over the place for about .50 apiece now, including Sky. Since they worked so well for me, I'd like to buy another lot of Sky discs, but I don't like the dealer I used, and can't find anyone else that carries them. If I have to, I'll go with the other HQ brands that are down in the 50 cent range, but that's only if I can't find more Sky media (why rock the boat when they've proven themselves, --at least to me, right?). :)

Hey, I just thought of something. I saw a post by someone that bought from that same dealer I did claiming that they ordered Sky discs and got generic. Now I'm wondering if I've been using Sky discs at all. Y'see, according to the website, there are two different types of Sky discs. First there are the ones with the big, pretty "Sky" logo, and then there are those without it, but still supposedly produced by Sky. I went with the latter, because they were a little cheaper. I looked closely at the printing (on the bottom, near the center), and all I see are the usual batch numbers, along with the following: "IFPI GZ07" and "DVD-R 4.7Gb 4x AN32". Anyone know for sure if these are really Sky, or did I get suckered with generics? If they are generics, I have to admit, they've kicked ass and I really can't complain. Oh, the irony. :)
