i have a dell T3400 workstation running windows xp pro and i want to swap out my E4600 dual core for a Q6600 quad core. I know the hardware will be compatible but my question is will i need to reinstall windows xp once i swap out the cpu. has anyone one done this sucessfully or will i need to do a fresh install?
thanks for the reply and im glad to hear that. as for the heating issue since i was a fool and bought a dell instead of building my own system i will be running the Q6600 at stock speeds and the standard cooling should be fine.
sammorris i know it will owrk because the q4600 is an option as an upgrade but i was worried i would have to reinstall my xp pro after i swap the chip but i spoke with dell tech support and they said it would boot just fine so i will kepp you all posted.
It should boot fine, it's if you change your motherboard you need to be concerned, not the CPU. Oh, and it's the Q6600, not Q4600.
woops thats right im going from a e4600 to q6600, lol.. But i will not be changing the mobo just a striaight cpu swap. i the board on the dell t3400 precision supports the q6600 ans should be just fine according to dell tech support, we will see!
