    Wow, unless you think about making a living from video editing, there is no need to spend that much money.
    A recent standard PC with some good software can be sufficient.
    Read the basic articles at http://www.digitalvideoclub.com to learn what you need for what type of task.

    I'll agree, its overkill if you're just a hobbyist.

    If you still want to go for an editing system, I highly recommend Apple's Final Cut Pro as the best editing package out there. If you're willing to spend that much cash, you might want to check out a Mac.
