Greetings all. This is my first post. I have been working on a project for the last 6 months or so do digitize and post sermon audio to our website. We have recordings going back to 1974, so this is a long-term project.

I have audio software which does almost everything I want (Magix), but there is one issue with a big chunk of my tapes that I can't seem to fix: whomever recorded this particular batch must have been as deaf as a stone. They are recorded with the volume turned ALL THE WAY UP and the sound is very distorted and "fuzzy". I reduced the gain, and now the volume is lower, but it is still distorted.

I can remove hum, hisses, pops, coughs, etc - but I can't fix this! Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with Magix, but perhaps a different editor (Audacity) might have a filter just for that problem. Audacity is free so it's worth a try.
