My little brother hit his xbox when it was "cheating" now it won't boot and gives an 07 error. I have taken it apart and when it tries to boot the hard drive makes horrible noises. It is stock so from the research I have done I need to get a modchip, a hard drive, and an autoinstall cd. so my questions are:

What modchip is recommended? (I'm not afraid of soldering, and I have no intrest in anything fancy I just want the thing to run like it did before.)

What hard drive size? (I have a spare 13gb that gives a SMART failure detect in my computer but seems to work fine is this ok?)

Where do I get an autoinstall cd image?

    Thanks for any help.

Have you tried tightly connecting the IDE cable? Your brother could've popped something loose or he could have snapped something in the cable. If you still can't get it, try another cable. If that doesn't work, post back.

Oh sorry I forgot to mention. Tried plugging cable in, tried a new cable, and I popped the hard drive in my computer but it just makes clicking noises and can't be detected by the bios. Should've mentioned it before, but I did read the sticky about errors in this forum.

Alright, 1 more question. Are you planning to frequently mod or just play it like a normal xbox?

I want it to be as close to normal as possible. It's for my little brothers, so I don't want anything complicated for them. But I'm pretty comfortable doing whatever it takes to get there, I'm handy with a soldering iron and I build my own computers so cracking open this thing doesn't worry me. I just don't want to spend any more money than I have to.

u can buy a 200GB HD very cheap im guessing $20-$40 on ebay
or yes your 13GB is fine

    Autoinstaller

For the autoinstaller your going to use Slayer 2.6 or 2.7
    heres 2.6

He's just looking for something to get it to work. Xecuter's can be a little pricy, so if he just wants something basic and cheap that will work, he should get a Duox 2 modchip.

Okay I've got a DuoX 2 GS chip installed and it's working. I only have a wireless controller and it doesn't seem to be doing anything, it asks me to insert a cd and press A. I do and nothing happens.

I have installed a hard drive 13GB and it seems to see it fine, but I have no idea how to prepare this drive. So basically I can boot to the cromwell screen and now I'm stuck. Please help. (and yes I'm a total noob)

Okay I'm all up and running now, thanks everyone for your help. And here is a summary of what I did so anyone else who is going through the same thing has a basic roadmap.

    1) started with unmodded xbox that had 07 error (hdd timeout)

    2) bought duox 2 gs chip and installed (not hard on my xbox v1.4)

    3) flashed chip with a new bios (had problems at first using wireless controller that wouldn't work. so I went and got an OEM wired controller that worked great. used x2.5035 bios - got black screen with audio, then used ind 5003 bios - worked great)

    4) installed a hard drive I had laying around 13GB

    5) ran slayers autoinstall cd, locked the hdd and now everything works perfect stock or on the mod chip.
