I have a lttle problem and hopefully u guys could help out. I decided to try the AID on an older Xbox I recently got which had the crappy Samsung dvd drive. After experimenting a few times, I rebooted and it was fine but then I rebooted again and the infamous Error Message 21 show up. I tried rebooting a few times with the tray open, close and the message still comes up which leads me to believe that I no longer have a dashboard. Looking around I found out about HotSwapping and HD fatXbox Explorer 1.4 and I managed to get the Xbox to work by replacing the .xbe on C. Then by sheer stupidity I decided to mess with the AID again and again it got messed up so I figure, I fixed once I could do it again. Wrong! I replaced the files again, I add them to the E drive but nothing this time. Im pretty sure its a bios problem but im not sure how to access it or even how to tell it were to load from. I tried booting with the AID dvd and cd in the drive and nothing.

Ive been looking through all posts regarding Error 21 and Hotswap and now I have a question, sorry if it is stupid. Does it really matter if I shut off the xbox before putting the IDE cable back after a hotswap? I only ask because the first time I did a hotswap it worked and after I messed it up again I have tried it and switch files a few times but I just realized that after I did the file transfer i shut off the Xbox and then replace the IDE cable back. Am I doing it backwards?

thats because your MS dashboard is on the C drive and it needs to be repaired.

I have replaced the MS DASH a couple of times, one from the one on the C: on my other modded Xbox and another with the backup copy of the original and still nothing. Ive read about FTPing the files but I cant do that since it wont boot to the dashboard, any other ways to FTP? Specially when the dashboards are not available?

if you reinstalled the original files and the MS dash on the C drive you won't get the error 21. when the BIOS tried to launch the dashboard from the C drive and it's not an official (signed by MS) so that is why then you get error 21.

Hmmm I believe I just got an original MS DASH file from the "usual places" but havent tried that one yet. Is there any other file that would need to be replaced?

the 'usual place' doesn't host an official MS dashboard, an official is signed by MS and therefore you have legality issues hosting it.

i just modded a 1.6 and backed up the C/E drive to a CD-R for the customer, here is a snap shot of the C drive, all are what is originally on the drive with the exception of the 'backup' folder, that's a backup of the EEPROM i did when i modded it.

EDIT: i just read your first post again, if you have AIDeluxe 3.10 it has an option to reinstall the official MS dash back to the C drive.

Finally! I Fixed it! I can relax now!
    Thanks KC for the assist.

I fixed it by Hotswaping (using the tutorial here),using my backup files from my other modded Xbox and Xplorer360beta5 to transfer the files.

I think that before since I was trying to use Xplorer360 V.09 and I couldnt get the damn thing to work I used HD fatXbox Explorer 1.4 which helped me the first time but this time around didnt to s**t for me so I found Xplore360 beta5 and It work it got easier to transfer all files. Anyways Im staying away from AID this time around, at least for a while. Again, thanks KC for ur assist.

yeah AID can get you in trouble if you get to carried away with it on a soft modded box. the way i learned to use it was on my chipped box where if anything got screwed up i could just boot with the chip on and fix it back.
