im installing a new 160gb Seagate Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM 8MB Cache 3.5-inch Drive into my friend computer with an upgrade from windows me to windows xp sp2 and I keep getting this message "Error Message: Cannot Find \Windows\System32\hal.dll" and so the whole insatllation stops thier of XP. i need advice please as im getting frustrated
Try following the instructions at: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm I had read about that error being a problem with the boot.ini pointing to the wrong partition on a dual boot system but hadn't run into it myself.
already searched there but im still getting this error. I go into Seagate's DiscWizard setup disc and all i get is erase the partition and some utilities and blah blah blah, but I can't seem to find dynamic drive overlay (ddo) to delete. And also it will only read 137gb and not my full 160.
Hey Do you really need to UPGRADE to XP? If you perform a FRESH install of XP you should have no problem. If data loss is the reason, you can GHOST the data from another drive after the installation. Your 160Gb will not be detected as such untill you install SP1,2 or use a large drve enabler.
cant ghost info from old drive(me) to new drive(xp) with xp loaded on new drive as ghost will overwrite all info on xp to me which means your back to square 1. try this link http://www.compphix.com/corrupthal.html
@-ianski7- i cant ghost the image if I cant install XP... "fresh insatll" @-ddp- I have also done this with no luck the new XP version has SP2 and its own boot disc which is cool since I don't have to use 2000 to reformat the hard drive, but it still sucks since I can't get past the first installation of XP.
Hey ddp, when I suggested ghosting I didn't mean to the same partition -- that would be foolish! Sorry, I misunderstood. When you start the XP setup and it copies setup files, do you see the hal.dll being copied on the bottom of the screen? When you did the bootcfg/lst was the hal.dll in the boot.ini file?
TOO fast to read the setup files (didn't really look... hehe) i got one more trick up my sleeve so Ill see what I can pull off.
i swear im gonna kill my self!!! All I had to do was delete the dynamic drive overlay (ddo) in Seagate's DiscWizard and all came out perfect, I got all my hard drive instead of 137 and XP is installing . I hate computers
It was just a misconfiguration with the damn thing, I never had this problem but I also never used this type of hard DRive before...dunno
