Really appreciate your help. I've been burning DVD for backup for awhile using DVD Shrink with nero 6.X. I upgraded to Nero 8* and ran into a mess. I realize my OS is old. Hi arcas1966 Here's a couple of suggestions: Recorder: <_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A> Version: 1.05 Update your firmware to the latest - 1.0b CdRomPeripheral : _NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off CdRomPeripheral : ATAPI DVD-ROM atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off Turn DMA back on for the drives. Here's a guide Disc Manufacturer ID: <CMC MA> <G. AM3> Not the best. Better to use would be Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell. Illegal discs errors are usually caused by the firmware not supporting the media. Now the other problem is the autoburn w/ Shrink and Nero 8. Won't cause a burn failure but the discs will be unplayable in a dvd player. Will play in the pc though. So once you get the burn error fixed you should break it into 2 parts - have Shrink just save to the hard drive then use Nero Burning Rom or Express to burn the video_ts folder. You could also use ImgBurn instead for the autoburn feature. You just need to install a tweak to Shrink to have this option. Thanks Binkie7. I'm still going through some frustration. Below is a log. I tried to use Shrink then Nero Recode and came up with these errors. I fixed the DMA and flashed the DVD drive. I'm getting a DVD patent activation error now. Is this causing the error below? I'd hate to purchase Nero 8 and still have problems. Can you recommend a step by step way of maybe bypassing nero 8 to do this. Using freeware components or software. In the past I was able to backup up my DVD with using DVDFab dekrypter on occasion than DVD shrink. My nero demo 6.X version expired and ever since trying to do the Nero 8... its been a mess. I question if its the media ( recently purchased from meritonline.com same brand from last time) or software at this point. Thanks for you input. I think your drive is just getting long in years and can't cope with new media. Latest version from RPC1 is 1.0c from here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1517 ...and is still over three years old. Might be time for a new burner.
Yeah I agree may be time for a new burner - it is old in burn years You can try another burning program and see if it makes a diff. Here's a good free one - ImgBurn. You can also set it to autoburn w/ Shrink. Download this tweak to Shrink and save the exe to the dvd shrink folder Link. ImgBurn will now be listed as an option under select backup target in Shrink. Oh and edited out the 1 serial # in the log too
I went ahead an ordered online a new DVD burner. Using Imqburn and shrink will I need nero? If so, is there a way to avoid nero?
Nope won't need Nero to burn w/ Shrink. Nero might come in handy though if you want to burn like multi session discs, audio cd's, convert avi's etc. Has a lot more options for stuff like this than ImgBurn. If you don't need it then uninstall it using the Clean Tool. I'd run a registry cleaner like the free ccleaner after uninstalling and rebooting. Nero like other programs tends to leave a bunch of stuff behind.
