Error, then doesn't finish writing

    I have used up my first 50 pack and probably trash about 10 or 15 of those getting started (learning curve still continues - hense this post) , now I have not been able to get back to sams to get another 50 of the verbatim dvd-r(read post that quality media is important) and picked up 15 pack of maxell dvd-r and have trashed the first 3 using dvd copy x platinum. Looking at the media it looks like about have of it has been written to. and the error note is as follows (am I doing anything wrong or is it the Maxell?):

    You need to update the firmware. You are 4 updates behind. That should help alot w/ the blank media

    also installing a "working" aspi layer could help.
