    Hello,

I recently received a package of dual layer dvd's from Japan. I tried burning an iso of a program that I had previously mounted and installed successfully. I first tried PowerIso then Nero 7 Burning ROM. I used the lowest speed of 2.4x both times. What should I try next after spoiling the first two disks?
I got this log with Nero:

same old errors from nero.. it's time people ditched this garbage..

RICOHJPN, Media Type ID: D01, Product revision number: 67

well known bad disks.. rubbish in fact.. I got 3 good burns off a spool of 25....

    HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10N

    junk drive.. real junk....

pair of hardware errors.. most likely the useless drive has died.. they last from 1 to 20 burns these oem hl-st-dt junk.. especially when faced with complete rubbish disks like those.. I have seen brand new drives fail on the first attempt to burn a disk.. these oem things are honestly that bad...I would guess focus servo or laser fail.. could do diagnostic if I could be bothered.. but it's an oem lump of junk so I don't see any point continuing with this..

so where to start fixing the problem..
1: ditch nero.. it isn't capable of doing dual layer burns..(I don't give a crap what nero peddlars and fanboys say.. it's crap bloatware drm riddled garbage..and it isn't even a capable burning engine any more) why do people insist on attempting to use it when time and time again they are told to use imgburn ?

2: buy some decent disks.. ricoh d/l are complete crap.. no better than memosux ..

3: buy a good branded burner.. look for the ones the people in the quality scans thread are using.. Personally I would go pioneer or samsung, but others say benq or lite-on (which I wouldn't even feed cmc disks to.. bad experiences with lite-on.. The HL in the oem name is hitachi lite-on.. but in your case it's an LG ... same crap... their branded drives are so bad they now don't even admit to making them, instead filling oem boxes with their garbage... says it all really, a manufacturer not even admitting they made something..).. benq I have neutral feelings for.. they are ok.. wouldn't say gerat.. just ok.. should manage to burn a d/l disk without dying, but they might make a few coasters on the way till you find disks that work.

No problems with Imgburn though. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

If I may express my humble opinion, there seem to be two cultures on the hardware forums. One that believes very strongly and values building high quality pc's with price being no object, and the other culture that strives to build pc's within rather confined budgets; for example, I aimed to build my HTPC for $500 which, for the most I succeeded in doing. I take some pride in that accomplishment, especially in view of the high performance I have acheived. Part of that accomplishment involved the occasional use of older cheaper components from existing components from other computers on the home network. I guess it's any person's right to buy/build what he/she chooses, realizing that one frequently gets no more than what one pays for. The same can probably be said of other purchases besides computers and their components. LG is a huge company and I expect they offer a range of quality in optical drives like everyone else. My H10N was purchased 6 or 7 years ago and there is no shame on it making the occasional error being that it only cost $35. I won't comment on what the Nero 7 cost me! The dual layer disks were the cheapest I could find anywhere in the world.
