I have been using my Sony CRX1600L for the past 4 years. It's a 12x write,8x rewrite & 32x read and connects via i-link(Sony's name for firewire 400). I have never had a problem with it and I have used it a lot. There are so many newer and better models from Sony and from other manufacturers. You can look at a USB 2.0 or firewire 800 option. Ensure that the accompanying software is also good. I like Nero & CloneCD but there are several others. Here's my best advice, go to www.cnet.com and browse around in Storage until you find External CDRW. Also since the cost of a DVDRW is now quite affordable, maybe you should have a look at this as a better storage alternative.

i don't use 'proper' external burners, but i do use two Belkin USB2.0 enclosures (infinitely cheaper way to do it) . i've had a dvd burner in each one - great gadgets to have, though at the moment i have a dvd burner in one, and my dvd-rom/cd burner combo drive in the other..

I would also shop Newegg.com for a burner as well since a good one nowadays runs only $40 or so. I like my new BenQ1640 and so do many members here as well. :)
