External Burning and Nero

Been experiencing some of the same problems as you'all..burning errors. I'm attempting to use Nero OEM 6.6.0.15. Using a Coolmax CD 510-u2 external enclosure and a NEC 3520a drive.

After much trial and error, I'm convinced it's Nero. I contacted Nero technical support and they came back with the same old song about removing all other burning software, updating all of my drivers, flashing the ROM on the burner, blah, blah, blah.

Desperate, I dragged an old copy of NEO out of my archives. I can burn flawlessly all of the time with NEO DVD on the same hardware configuration.

Personally, I think Nero is a huge disappointment, not only for this issue, but for others I've previously tried to get resolutions to.

will happily have a go at getting your Nero up and running - post LAST section of your Nero log, which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

am gonna no doubt recommend some of the things as Nero support, but that's because the logfiles are extremely good at giving a picture of your setup. Once we fix any settings that potentially need tweaking, we should have you up and burning.

Have requested thread be teleported to Nero forum also.

@Nephilim - why thank you kind sir.

@denret - just reread your post. the word enclosure stands out to me. There's a few long-running threads on afterdawn re enclosures and Nero, so one thing i'd like to possibly try at some point is get you to mount the drive internally and do some 'simulation' burns (thus not wasting any discs)

Thanks for the feedback...sorry, but I can't find a way to attach the log file to this reply. I'm not sure it will be of any use anyway. The error message from Nero the last couple attempts has been "unidentified atapi error" and then the machine locks up and requires reboot. Thus, I'm not sure anything usable is being generated.

FYI....since my last post, I downloaded a trial copy of Deepburner Pro.
Burns like a champ...no errors or coasters, as well as does NEO.

In response to a late post, yes I am attempting in an External configuration, and yes this DVD drive did work perfectly internally before moving to the External application.

My references to NEO and Deepburner are in the External burning mode.
They work flawlessly with precisely the same hardware setup. Nero does not...

I'm almost to the conclusion that if it quacks like a duck and it walks like a duck....

Ill forward the log file if you'll kindly send some detailed instructions.

    Thanks again

bear with me, i've not as good at reading the Win98's 'Existing drivers' section at the end of the log as well as WinXP....

    - you firmware's out of date, 3.05 is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2005

    - OMG! 3MB free, that's a record for me. First of all 255MB is not the most ideal amount for DVD work (even under Windows 98, though i'll admit the oldest OS i used for dvd work was Win2000). Either way, something's used up ALL your memory which is bad news anyway, and bad news for any dvd burning

    - you're burning too close to the edge of the disc(s). If you use DVD Shrink, set target size in Shrinl's preferences to 4300MB, thus avoiding outer edge of discs and not sacrificing much space

    - not sure if INFODISC is of too good a quality , but it's a rewritable so hopefully cranking back the target size should be sufficient

    - sorry, had to quote that purely for comedy value, that's a great error!

    - as i say, no free memory, the firmware's out of date and the target size needs adjusting.

    - those 2 look suspiciously like Roxio (or Easy CD Creator as it used to be known) - Roxio and Nero don't play well, try uninstalling Roxio and fully removing it via Roxio Zapper (which you just need to google search for)

Some/all of these things have probably been suggested/advised by Nero support, but i've simply gone thru the log and highlighted the problems within. I'm certainly not gonna bend your arm towards any burning software, however until all the problems are addressed Nero won't work properly for you. I can't comment on the other 2 softwares you mention as haven't used those myself..

I use the same version of Nero with [bold]TWO[/bold] burners in external enclosures on my laptop via USB... That leads me to believe that it is definitely not Nero... I uninstalled all the Roxio/Sonic crap as directed prior to adding my burners and they were plug and play when I did...

Thanks for your effort and feedback. I will attempt to implement some or all of your observations. However, I'm beginning to think Nero is over-engineered...everthing in your computer has to be Nero's way or else.

The other two burner applications I referred to were "NEO DVD", a burner program available from "Mediostream". It's been around awhile and works well in most applications. The other one, "Deepburner" is something I saw on this forum and just decide to try for purposes of testing my hardware setup. Both of these programs burn any kind of DVD flawlessly with all of the same hardware...no tweaking.

It could be that Nero just doesn't like Windows 98se. If so, they should state that fact. As stated earlier, given all of the hype thats thown Neros' way, I'm very much disappointed.

    Thanks again

I myself have been using nero for donkeys years, across win98, w2k and xp. I have never had an issue with nero. Before that I used easy cd creator without issue thru various versions, until 5.0 when I had loads of bugs, then I moved to nero and never looked back. But that's just my own experience.

Whether you or I like nero or not/ whether its over-engineered or not, doesn't matter at this point, as the logfile shows you have fundamental issues on your machine, such as old firmware for instance. That's separate to burning prog, as firmware is what allows your burner to deal with media/newer media, and burn speeds. Until you correct the things I've poined out, you will have problems. It just happens that the other programs are working for you at the moment. As I said before, I'm not here to persuade you to choose one prog over another, but if you try and use nero with these incorrect or out of date settings, those settings are still out of date or incorrect. If you don't want to do these basic things like get your stuff up to date then all I can suggest is you stick to the other programs until they in turn let you down at some point due to those self-same things in the logfiles...
