I have this Acomdata HD500UHE5-72 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive that I purchased less than a year ago (now that I checked the ratings this unit is at the bottom of the list). Suddenly my computer did not recognize the drive anymore. You can hear the USB sound looking for the device but cannot find it. Power turns on and I use Windows XP SP2.

I have tried opening from a different PC, replacing the USB cable and other tricks in the Computer Manager with no luck.

Do you hear any sounds coming from the drive?

Do the platters spin up? Can you just not see the data or is the drive totally not there when you go to safely remove hardware? Did you try reinstalling the drivers?

The drive is kind of silent but yes there is a constant click which leads me to believe that the plates spin. The drive vanished from the PC is not just the data. You do not really need to install the drivers on XP for this unit, the PC knows when is connected but the answer is no, I have not tried to reinstall the drivers. Computer Manager shows that the device works fine (not true) and does not ask to update the drive.

I have the EXACT same problem. It just all of a sudden stops working. It's not the port which works fine with everything else. I also can hear some 'clicking' sounds from the HD. I need to retrieve the stuff stored in there. Please help!

I took it to a local shop and they said that the HD is fine. They will replace the case and already transfered the information to another drive.

I called for estimates on this job and got some from $250 to $3,000 to retrieve the data. Be careful as of where you take your drive.

    Good luck with yours.
