Hi! I just got an external DVD burning device. When I connect the USB to the computer it always gives me an error sign saying that a HI-Speed device has been plugged in to a non-hi-speed USB... then it also says it will continue working in reduced speed. Is there any way to correct this? Will this affect the speed at which my DVD burns? (by the way, it's a 4x DVD burner)
Hiya, Yes - plug it into a USB2 port instead of USB. Things you should consider: 1 - STANDARD USB (original) has only 1.1 MBytes/sec approx data rate MAXIMUM, single speed DVD burning requires 1.38 MBytes/sec MINIMUM: if you burn through STANDARD USB you WILL have buffer under-run issues (faulty burns etc depending on how good the protection is on the drive etc.) 2 - A USB2 port feeding a STANDARD USB hub will be throttled down to STANDARD USB speeds by the hub: DO NOT use a hub for high-speed devices, connect straight to the port 3- If the USB2 drivers are not loaded correctly in the O/S, USB2 ports default to STANDARD USB speeds 4 - Most modern motherboards (last year or so) have at least 2 USB2 ports, many have more 5 - only use STANDARD USB for low data-rate devices like mice, keyboards, tablets etc (they can be used on a hub if needed) If you get everything right, you stand a good chance of burning at full speed (depends on many other factors also). have Fun....
If your system only supports USB1 you can get a USB2 PCI card to add USB2 capability which is definitely needed to run an external burner as drchips stated.
