I have TOSHIBA Satellite laptop with CD writer and DVD-Rom. Can I use external drive for DVD backup. If yes. How can I do that. I want to make some my DVD back up. Please help me to understand this process.
    Thanks

If you're meaning an external DVD burner then the major consideration would be whether your laptop supports USB 2.0 since USB 1.1 doesn't have the transfer rate necessary to run a DVD burner properly.

Other than that it should work fine :)

    Here're the steps,

Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.

Once in Device Manager scroll down to "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and expand it.

USB 2.0 controllers will be labeled as "enhanced" so you'll want to look for that.

If none of them are listed as enhanced you can also get a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card for your laptop.

As far as reasonably priced drives are concerned, my personal opinion is that Lite-On can't be beat. I believe their external is the model SOHW-812SX.

The USB controller you have should have drivers for the PCMCIA device.... make sure you install though
