The power in my apartment went out this morning and now my pc doesn't recognize my external hard drive. It's a 500 Gig Elements drive. Does anyone know how to fix the problem? Thanks in advane for any assistance given.

One thing you can do is to try and get a scandisk or chkdsk going on that external drive. You might have to remove the drive from the enclosure and connected inside your computer to get it to read(in case the external electronics got damaged).

Most hard drives will survive the occasional power outage without any damage but sometimes the file system gets corrupted and you need to run a chkdsk x: /f (x= the drive letter of your external). If you do a scandisk make sure the boxes to fix errors are check.

Worst comes to worst you can use the free testdisk to conduct more indepth repairs and also testdisk has full file recovery capabilitys.

    Bump.

I'm having the same problem for possibly the same reason. My hard drive just stopped showing up one day and I cant get my computer to recognize it. Does anyone have any more options to fix it or even to back up my data?

I am having the same problem with my WD external. I could not find a guide on how to install it in the PC. Can it be installed like any other drive?
